DDOS attack is common nowadays. As a webhost provider, what is the most practical way to respond to DDOS attack? Definitely such an can affect business online as it can shut down servers. I heard solutions are quite expensive.

Ever wanted to know who uses a DNS or MX server ? with DNS History you can find out.
It comes down to the type of customer you host. I remember many years ago there were quite a few DDoS attacks going around but almost always related to IRC. Whether its bouncers/servers. If you host a successfull on-line business you are always open to attack.
There are a few companies out there that specialise in DDOS mitigation, gigenet and proxyshield spring to mind but essentially if you want to stay alive during a DDOS attack you need enough bandwidth to take the hit and a solid network.

Not usually the bandwidth that kills, it's the creation of flows (if you're using a flow based routing architecture) and PPS that does the damage - Especially if you combine the two, high PPS (small packets) forming unique flows. Most Layer3 switches tend to be flow based, which is why they don't always make great routers depending on your traffic profile/customer profile.

Yeah hence the 'solid network' bit, but you put it much better At Rackspace they have something they call PrevenTier which is connected directly to the core routers via fibre and all traffic for those customers passes through that before it even reaches the copper network, switches, firewalls and so forth.

Hi, I'm Steve from SkyNetHosting.Net. I was all tied up with work and asked my new assistant to signup here for me but I guess he made a pretty much of a mess, sorry about that. Once he's at office he would be reprimanded accordingly and I assure that all posts now on would be useful to the community. You may delete the 6 post made by Alex if you find them disturbing.

We have been working with quite a few different ISPs for solutions, both inline and "outline". Most of them will come in about £40-50k when it's all setup etc. We have been pretty impressed with some of the boxes we've tinkered with.
There are other services around, for example Prolexic, who have proved to be quite good.
Anyway, if anyone is serious about DDoS solutions feel free to gimme a shout.
