RAID 1 - two volumes but Win OS installs on Disk 1

Hi Guys

Using HP's SmartStart install disks and a couple of DL360s ...

Setting up Win2K3 R2 on a couple of HP360G5s. Created two Raid arrays (from disk 1 & 2 and Disk 3 & 4) on the P400i RAID array. Created two logical volumes, one on each array.

Installed W2K3R2, no choice was given as to which volume the OS would be installed on, and I wasn't thinking, so carried on regardless. OS installed on 'Disk 1' (according to Windows Disk Manager). Uhm, that's annoying!

OK so, for the second 360 I created only one volume from HDDs 1 & 2, thinking I can create the second after Win installs - heehehehe, I'm skinning cats and beating he system... oh no I wasn't!

Win Installs and is located on Disk 0. I subsequently create the second array and volume and after the next boot Disk Manager reports that the OS has shifted from Disk 0 to Disk 1! Arhhh. the new disk being Disk 0.

Am I missing something here?

Regards
Lea

Hi Andy

Let me get this right.

Your are saying that your customers have two arrays comprising 1 X RAID 1 (2 xHDDs naturally) and a RAID 5 volume. But the OS automatically installs to the correct RAID 1?

Maybe it's because I have two identical RAID 1 volumes and Win installer cannot determine which to place it on.

However, what really confuses me is that when I created the second RAID1 volume, Win booted and labelled what was Disk 0 as disk 1, so the OS shifted from Disk 0 to 1!?

Confused!

Lea

Its cobblers and unfortunately happens on the later SStarts...

You've have two options, use SStart 7.5/6/7 - these work, or install the diags parition from SS first (if you want it) then stop using it. Partition the disks as required via bios or gui on SStart then install windows in the partition. Afterwards run the SStart update procedure to install the missing drivers and admin utils.

Whenever I am installing on a machine with multiple disks/raid sets I always remove the surplus disks before installing the operating system. It's just good habit especially when dealing with reinstalls and so forth. Just unplug them before power on or just don't create the second raid set before installin.

Yep, that's exactly what I did on the second machine, but after I created the second array Windows shifted the OS from Disk0 to disk1...!!

Never managed to correct it..
