Ip scanner

Can anyone recommend a simple free IP scanning tool, where I can put in a set range of IP's, and it tell me what Ip's on that range are online / pinging?

Would save me some considerable time pinging 1000+ ips :P

Cheers

But if I want to do Ips on a range of say 5.5.5.* will nmap do it?

Windows, or Linux.

If it's going to be Windows it has to work from my broadband connection. The angry one seems to want to run on our network to scan our ips?

nmap gets a vote here. Why use broadband/Windows for this kind of task, neither really suit? Linux+100mbit is the only way.

Be wary of scanning from your home connection - some ISPs will block you for it.

Yeah, it seems to me a simple ping tester, not a port scanner, is the best. The best ping testers seem to be multithreaded: I found a nice bunch of sample Delphi code, might have a play putting something together if I get some spare time. I made a handy little Win tray app to monitor our servers using HTTP HEAD method for efficiency, which tests at specified intervals and pops up a message if any servers fail the test; the same concept could be used for pinging IP ranges.
