unable to open simms

CAN ANYONE HELP
I bought the Simms for my daughter to load on the computer and a couple of add-ons. We loaded them on fine but when we go to open it up it just closes itself down. As you can probably guess I am just a novice on the computer and do not fully understand all the technicall stuff. All other programmes I have loaded on does not have a problem. We are running xp.
My cousins had a problem with the sims also. Installed find but when loading up she would just get a blank screen. She took it back to the shop and got a new copy. Same happened again. The 4th copy *lol* worked fine. So Im thinking they maybe had some problems with one of their batches of the disks ?
