Hi,
We're looking for a server monitoring solution and I wondered if anyone can offer any recommendations.
We need at a minimum ping plus the ability to connect to a specific TCP or UDP port. Alerts should be sent by email and SMS.
Thanks.

dotcommonitor would seem to fit the bill for this if you want it off network

pingdom.com for external (websitepulse is also good albeit more pricey).
zabbix.com for internal.
Both using email notifications and email 2 textanywhere.net sms gateway (hell of a lot cheaper than pingdom alerts).
We use pingdom.com - it is pricey but very good. Only thing i don't like is they display a 'response' time which is an average response time - so they are taking results from servers in the USA accessing servers in the UK. I am hoping they will give us the ability to remove that as it makes clients think the servers are slow.
Other points worth mentioning - there is an iphone app ;-)

Pingdom or Panopta for an all in one package.
We also do our own internal monitoring using an SMS Gateway for less critical stuff as its a lot cheaper!

Is it just for one server or multiple?
We use Pingdom (which is a great service), and also have some nagios boxes to elimnate false-positives.

Nagios is very configurable - you'll just need an SMS solution to work with this for text notifications. Alertra & Hyperspin are pretty cost effective too.

For internal monitoring, opsview is a nice frontend for Nagios - makes configuration much easier if you're not familiar with Nagios's config files etc, and basically ties everything together...

We settled on Pingdom (for well over a year now), used Wormly (for a few months, also very good). Couple of threads a while back has further info:
Monitoring Windows servers?
Pingdom and FTP service checks...

One thing I will say is that if you want something a bit more bespoke then definitely head over to Panopta. Unfortunately Pingdom are pretty much useless at acting on client feedback which has allowed Panopta to come on leaps and bounds in the last year!

We use Pingdom, top notch on detecting issues but as Jon says they don't respond to user feedback.
I would love the ability to group checks it would clean the interface up when looking at 40+ checks. Multi-user access would be handy too.

My views are my own and not those of my company.
We monitor over 300 servers with Hyperspin and cannot recommend them enough. I think it's a one man band but he responds to feedback and has customised much of it for us. We obviously use internal monitoring but its nice to have a more independant report available to customers from a site like this.

Panopta..... seems significantly more cost than Pingdom though![]()
We're hoping to pay them to develop a bespoke solution that integrates into our billing system and then negotiate a discounted price for reselling a cut down version of their service.

Cacti + Thold. In use for many year, very happy with it. Pingdom watches over the Cacti box.
