    Event log monitoring...

As usual I'm on the scrounge for advice and a product...

Can anyone recommend a free (or near) event log capture/monitor/reporting tool?

    Had a look at:

    EventSentry
    GFI Events Manager

but cost is prohibitive if there are open source alternatives.

    Looking at approx 80 servers

    Cheers all
    Lea

I use Nagios, which I think is used by many, many people around the world.

Apologies - I think you're right (unless you write a plugin!)

On my Linux system log though, I also use Logcheck, which has some standard filtering criteria to get rid of most harmless entries. It still requires quite a lot of fine tuning. Combining this with redirecting syslog output to remote hosts should mean you can scan for interesting events.

It's quite simple though, so won't collate events etc.

    Log Check - dead website

Splunk - OMG, on the surface (with the Windows add-on) this looks very nice. Shame the email alerts aren't in the freebie though! Oh and how am I going to sell this product to hierarchy with a name like that!

I'm a Windoz Admni, so I tend to avoid Nagios….sorry

Xymon - System Monitoring with Xymon/User Guide - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
    Initially not sure…needs more investigation.

Splunk has definitely caught my attention. Any ideas on rough cost?

It's free up to a certain level of syslog messages, that level is pretty high so you might be able to get away with the free one!

Information is all on their site somewhere.

The interface and feature match is looking very good, but I would really like email notification which is in the Enterprise....oh and to turn it into the free version immediately, but I do understand why they provide you all the features to begin with - can't blame them!

    Can't find rough costs

splunk don't publish their pricing anywhere, as it would scare people off - they want you to play with it, then contact them to find out how much, at which ponit you might decide it's worth it.

Someone I know got some pricing last year, and it was something around about £10k/year for 500MB/day, so quite crazy - however they know that nothing else comes close so can afford to charge that much!

    £10K!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, it can be switched into the Free version, but you can't revert...

By your comments it appears to be licensed by MB/day - an interesting model..
