Managing software

Hi i am interested in buying helm as a windows server but i hate IIS ... really cant stand it !!!!

i dont want to start a hosting site i just like the look and feel of it when i tested it, if people know a free alternative i would try that aswell... basicly i want to run my website and have my own control panel like i do on my shared hosting that gives me good control like making pop accounts etc

i have no linux experiance but bags of windows experiance and i run apache win32 on my PC here to test scripts as i do a bit of php coding (very little but some skills wrote a few hacks for vb3 a week ago) and i love apache i think its really good is there a way i can have a windows server and use apache win32 ???

cheers all software will be looked at

and helm is ony 199 for a one off fee which i can stomach i dont want to pay every month for software and i dont even run a hosting site

Regards
Mickie

If cost is an issue I suggest you don't run any windows software - use open source software e.g. run RedHat Linux (to ease you in to the *nix environment) and use webmin to configure apache etc. as hosting software - all free.

Mish.

so you reckon i start a redhat linux box and use wbmin (looking at webmin its not to bad actaully)

but what about running my moh game server ? for a few hours each week ??

would i still be able to do this on redhat ?

and what should i look into to learn redhat ?

thanks again

I haven't quite understood your needs...

Q. Where is the server hosted ? Is it in a datacenter or running on your DSL/Cable connection

Q. Do you want HELM for a single site ? HELM is meant for easy administration & deployment of multiple virtual hosts in a web hosting environment. Spending $199 for a single website does seem overkill and also tad waste of money.

no m8 i am just about to build my new server and then colo it... but i wanted to know what control panel would suit me ???

i am not planning on being a webhost so i dont need all that fancy stuff but i would like and advanced cp that allows me to do pop accounts maybe some domain stuff if i want to have an extra site on aswell ??

im not gonna make money out of this i jsut want to offer my members more and i have 6000 members and my elite members 100 are willing to chip in to contribute to the costs of running it

basicly i need to know what i need, i know about apache/php/mysql/perl/ i just need to know what else i need and will the control panel i use (i dunno which) allow me to do lots of stuff ???

Regards
Mickie

If you need an integrated email solution then I suggest you use virtualmin with webmin - don't use it myself, but understand it deals with all the email account stuff fairly easily.

If you're comfortable in a native DOS environment, then remote admin of *nix shouldn't be a problem (just different commands ) - but the good news is that you'd be using the webmin gui so shouldn't need to know too much anyway...

No idea about game servers I'm afraid, but someone in this forum should do.

If you are able to spend some money on a ControlPanel and want to host 2 or more sites...then spend on http://directadmin.com Its a one-time cost.

I've used Plesk, Cpanel and H-Sphere...and all of them are way overpriced compared to DirectAdmin. So, have decided on DirectAdmin for our new servers as well.

Regarding what you have to learn...that's a rather long list. But day-to-day becomes very easy with a CP. For initial setup & security there's a good guide up on http://admin0.info

webmin/virtualmin is quite comprehensive and definately cost effective
helm is about the best for windows
CPanel seems to be the most widely used control panle
so you choices of CP are determined by your licencing on operating system and ongoing costs

I heard that it was Ensim has the largest market share, mainly due to selling it to datacentres at $1 per license and other silly deals. Off topic again though ...

(not saying you're wrong, just curious if anyone knows which actually is #1 popularity)
