Has anything changed in the past year, or is everything discussed in this thread still relevant today? Any updated recommendations?

I'm looking at putting some cameras up around the outside of my house - the ubiquiti route is interesting (already using ubiquiti router and waps which I'm pleased with), but seems like it would be more expensive and less reliable than dumb cameras hooked up to a smartish box in the loft.

Really just looking for something self-hosted and simple to maintain that I can look at over my browser on the network and reverse proxy it to access it from my phone when out.

Also planning on installing a smart alarm system though - any idea if it's worth having some sort of integration between the two?

Still happy with my HIKvision DVR and Sony cameras, use the iPhone app quite a bit to check on the cars etc..

For alarm panel, I use a separate system, and used the existing cabling and PIR's, ion and heat detectors and dropped in a Risco that also has a mobile app for remote checking/ alerting etc..

Random assortment of cheap chinese cameras and blueiris here.
Used to use zoneminder but it kept forgetting how to process some of the images from the more shonky cameras. Blueiris has been faultless.

Thanks for the help - have ordered a bunch of hikvision stuff. Just hope the local burglars don't wear caps.

The aim is to make yours less attractive to burgle than your neighbours... Cameras, alarm etc.. all act as a bit of a deterrent so that they hopefully go for an easier target

Exactly - don't have to run faster than the lion, just run faster than the next guy

After a few breakins all our neighbours have been installing burglar alarms, so figure I need to go one better. Plus then I'll be able to watch my cats (the rpi didn't work out so well)

Installed my hikvision stuff, seems lovely. Just one thing... Linux-using hikvisioneers - any tips for seeing cameras over the web interface? Doesn't work in any of my browsers because the plugin isn't supported. Internet just says "Use IE" or "Downgrade Firefox"...

Caught some criminals on there already! But the resolution is too low to read the number plate. A mixed result.
