    Wireless link?

    Morning all,

I need some suggestions on the best/easiest/cheapest way to wirelessly link 2 sites.

Approx 1.5km apart, all low rise buildings in the area, flat area, not hilly, not many/any trees.

Speed isnt *overly* important, at least 5mbit would be nice.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks!

Aaron, the 1.5KM you've quoted, is that direct, line of sight?

We have a link at work between two buildings that goes via normal unlicensed radio waves but has big antennas (orinco wavelink hardware I believe)

I'm not sure of the exact distance but I’d hazard a guess that its some where near what your after!

Its not too bad, get interference with other radio links sometimes but latency is pretty of 7-30ms, we can get a good 4ish+ mbit out of it (802.11b)

If you have LoS then two directional antenna + a Linksys WRT54GS running Sveasoft firmware at each end should do a decent job.

If you don't have LoS then you may have a problem...

laserbit stuff is fairly solid so far as I know. We quote it for building to building links with LOS, though we've yet to have any quotes go ahead on it (we've only recently branched into this) the kit is quite widely used and fairly sensibly priced. You're looking at about £9.9 k for 2 - 3km range, 100mbps, including installation.

I have heard of people using the BT ducting and running fibre down along side the copper phone lines... maybe an idea. But BT are not the most helpful of people!

Two of these on poles at each end:

Using HDF400 cable from the antenna down to the access points:

    http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-cable.htm

And 2 access points at either end. Something like a Linksys WRT54GS which you can also flash with OpenWRT firmware to get Linux running on them
