    KVM to Laptop

    Hmmm..
We havn't yet required KVM in the rack, we've been ripping the servers out and going to a build room - however, that means there is no connection to test etc, and it's a matter of going back and forth if you forget something.

Is there a way of getting the KVM into a laptop screen? Probably using some sort of hub which goes to USB or the ethernet port, and then you browse to its IP and see the Java console or something.. This would save the space of getting a keyboard, flatscreen and mouse with long cabling - or a 1U pullout drawer for it, which is probably more money than it's worth without 10+ 57U racks.

    Help?

    Joel.

we use an Aten KVM Over the NET (I believe that's the name) which is a 1 port KVM over IP with a windows and java client.

£150 is more money than it is worth? (That's all a 1U TFT costs).

    Karl,
Good point. I saw £150 too.. But then again, it's just a 42U rack. 38 or so is up for sale (new rack we've moved into, previous is simply our servers in a tiny itsy bitsy quarter rack) and we could sell for £100/mo as opposed to pay £150 and have that U 'waiting' for something to happen.

I suppose we'll get it for the second rack,
which will be next to it anyway.

    Cheers Crystal,
    I'll look into it

    Such fast response.

Yes, it's a CN6000. We actually have ours hooked up to a Belkin rackmount KVM which sits at the back of our rack, so we just hook a laptop up to the switch, and connect in that way and it also allows us to connect remotely.

We have 3 Dell 1u KVM units.. they slide in and out of the cabinets and the screen pops up.. Work a treat and nice and compact when not in use. The keyboard has trackball builtin for mouse also..

Cant reccomend them enough. The BBC have a lovely HP 1u unit opposite us.. that looks sexy too.

we went for KVM over IP for the fact that it just enables us to view any server in our rack, we just have a KVM over IP connected to the Belkin which supports daisy chaining and use keyboard changing. It's the best solution, and can be Zero-U if you really wanted...

    Belkin model if you please?
I was just getting this KVM -> laptop solution so we could have it in the rack, well, obviously not the laptop - but it's in the rack. I wasn't thinking overIP but thats always good, because you can 'rent it out' to clients per hour.

A single server KVMoverIP seems like the way to go,
meaning local access when we plug into the switch with a laptop, but also can be rented out.

Terribly risky renting it out to clients if it supports Keyboard device switching..

only takes one muppet to switch and ctrl-alt-del someones nix box a few times for you to get a lovely lawsuit!

We don't rent ours out, we do sometimes allow read only access to the user and then via phone or instant messenger they tell us what to do. And, i'm not sure about the belkin model number as i didn't purchase them, i'll try and find out for you.

    Ah yes,
But I didn't intend to have a keyboard switching. This would be a one server only KVM we'd get. Remote hands which change the server it's plugged into, and they would then access by IP. We don't need more than one server with KVM at a time. Only need a KVM for one server, one local user (us) and one remote.
