RHEL or CentOS on a Dell / HP ?

I see companies offering Dell hardware with CentOS.

What (other than license cost savings) are the benefits and negatives of using CentOS on a new Dell or HP build ?

The first difference is that with Red Hat you are really paying for a support contract which is missing from CentOS. There is community support for CentOS and all the software that makes up CentOS.

The second difference, is that the updates may be a little slower, as the packages need to be stripped of Red Hat trademarks before being distributed. The delay isn't normally that bad from what I have seen.

Your customers or your boss might feel a bit more happy knowing you are using RedHat branded software.

Specifically as opposed to using RHEL?

Lack of official RedHat support, no RedHat branding or artwork. Other than that, Centos is RHEL, it's 100% binary compatible.

Of course, if you have problems and you're running CentOS, you can always enlist the help of consultants such as myself.

I didn't think there was anything majorly different between RHEL & CentOS.

Main thing is to know whether there's anything OEM specific in the pre-installed vendor versions

    Hi,

Whilst CentOS is supposed to be basically a clone of Red Hat without the label and support as mentioned already, I have noticed that my Red Hat servers have always been much more stable than my CentOS servers overall. Never been able to figure out exactly why, but that's what I have experienced.

    Regards,
    Suhail.

Never had an unstable CentOS server, or FreeBSD Server, or Redhat server, or Windows server...

But I expect that's down the the hardware I choose more than the OS

Not to mention management of the server itself.

Not usually actually, we found the biggest problems are down to hardware and conditioned power - unless someone is messing around with configs and don't know what they are doing. We did a test with an old colo box we left in USA, running RH7.2, left it running without doing anything to it for quite a long time, and it kept running and running until the PSU eventually went.
