I need a server for shared accounts. I 'll use cpanel and CEnt OS. Which CPU do you recommend of the two and why?
I'd have 2gb ram, 400gb sata drives with 2 x SATA hardware RAID 1.Which server would be faster creating backups, processing logs, and serve normal websites some with forum on mysql?
The problem with the current quads is that that the core 2 chipset was built with 2 cores in mind. So in laymans terms, there are 2 pipes of data leaving the CPU, not 4. So it is question how much faster will server runs?
Get SCSI instead of the quad if poss, it'll make so much more difference

quad is server class, core2duo is something you'd stick in a home pc.
imo

Although both the above chips are not the Xeon brand aimed at the 'server' market... however to be fair the difference between a Core2Duo and Xeon 3000 is neglible... its just the server motherboard which accepts the Xeon which may have more features and be arguably more robust. That said... we've plenty of Core2 based CPUs on mid-priced Intel boards that run brilliantly.

I can back Rob up on that one!
My Core2Duo handles very well

Do you work for AMD? Because thats the sort of stuff they spout when comparing their quad cores
In reality that bottleneck isnt an issue for 99% of applications because there are other smaller bottlenecks in a system. There are guys with overclocked 4Ghz Quad Proc's seeing the same.

Blimey, you guys must love filling your racks with 1amp fan heaters!
There aren't many folks that actually need that much processing power (and before I get slated I did say aren't many......) and that is just gonna stick your colo costs up. Would it not be worth considering a more power friendly processor until the need stacks up for serious brains and keep your costs down... oh and have some "green" stickers too ;-)
Edit: > Oh and I guess this is more aimed at the OP than those charging for the space!
