Colocation Companies

Hi,
New to the site and was looking for a new hosting company. I have a Dell 1950 Poweredge server which uses 1amp of power (apparently).

Currently it is located in Blue Square and im paying £80/month inc VAT for 4IP's. and 3MBIT line. Im finding im going over this though and paying an extra £17/month +vat for each additional MBIT.

The main problem is bandwidth, Im not a company and dont want to be worried about going over the limit. Can anyone recommend any company who uses a decent Data Center (preferably Blue Square which will save me a trip to London to move it) and can beat that deal with loads of bandwidth?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

I'd have said that was a fairly decent deal myself for 1A power and it's a respectable price per mbit as well for such low volume. It might help if you said who you are currently with, as there's not a huge number of providers in BlueSquare (most of the companies using it, rent space/servers from 4 or 5 companies).

Im using KillerCreation.co.uk, If you think thats cheap check this out...

http://a1isp.co.uk/web/content/view/22/79/

I spoke to them on the phone, they have 24/7 telephone support, and can offer me hosting with 1amp power and 2TB bandwidth per month (twice as much as I get now) for £65 including VAT and £6 per MBIT I go over. Also they are in BlueSquare as well.

So its in the same DC, £15/month cheaper, twice as much Bandwidth, cheaper if I go over, 24/7 support, cisco routers.... Whats the catch? Seems too good to be true.

I'll echo that,

The cost is about half of what we'd charge you for the same in london.

1A seems a bit high for a 1950 but anyway.....

Just as a pointer I know 49pence do colocation in BSQ and it's very well priced. According to their site .5A and 3000GB is £29/month. To put that in perspective 3000GB a month is around about 10MBIT sustained so that should provide you with lots of head room. (or 1A and 2U for £59)

I don't know if 49pence are any good so this isn't a testimonial, just a pointer

What about taking a slightly different approach and putting on rate limiting on your server to make sure you stay down a 3mbit? As others have said though that price is decent for that spec/bandwidth

No worries buddy. Actually just called that PoundHost who use BlueSquare as well. They offered me 4000GB which is like 10MBIT for £63/month, free setup, dont have to drive to london cos they will sort it out. and 16IP's.
Apparently their transit is pretty good too, they think they use the same company for their bandwidth EuroConnect so pings should be low for the game servers.

Think im going to take that unless anyone knows any other decent offers?

I'll just agree with the majority here to say it's a very decent price. If you move to a cheaper provider you're likely to find the quality isn't there and/or they go bust - £80/month doesn't allow for much profit as it is.

What gives you that idea? Obviously the "reseller of a reseller of a reseller of a reseller" scenario does happen but Bluesquare also have a lot of direct single rack + suite holders.

Thanks for all your advise guys, Ive had a word with my current host and told them some of the deals that are being flown about. My only worry and reason for looking was because of the bandwidth. He said if I go over he's going to turn a blind eye provided I dont go crazy. Takes a load of my mind and I know its good transit their using.

Thanks again

I think he might mean bandwidth providers in BSQ of which I would say there are 8 of going from http://bluesquaredata.com/carriers.asp

1 amp , 1U and 3 Mbps for £80/mo, you have a great deal.

I am always wary of anything cheaper than that, id say thats the low end of what i would expect to pay myself.

In real world conditions, you'll probably find that works out at about 20mbit. With gaming, from what I've seen, it could be anywhere from 20-40mbit. I'd love to see what happened if everyone hosting with the crazy-volume companies used all their allowed bandwidth.

Half of whom I'm sure just have a vlan off the other half ...

Daemon2, sub £100/month for colo & a few Mb/s of bandwidth is a bargain, hunting for something much cheaper is going to come back nd bite you i the long-run.

killercreation - the AS# formerly known as 4u-networks, which makes reading some of the claims on their website a little interesting ...

lol, lets not go there, reading some of the stuff on their website is quite laughable really. Allowing unescorted access to colo customers in shared space for example (do you really want some else going near your equipment?), or that claim of every server being connected to a Layer3 switch - very poor network design, or mis-leading by half truths (i.e. it is a Layer3 capable switch, but being used in Layer2 only).

As for 24x7 support, I can't comment on that, all I'll say is, ask how many staff they have - less than 6 or 7 and you can't provide true 24x7 support - you can of course provide 24x7 emergency cover i.e. Someones mobile rings and wakes them up from their bed. I'll defer to Jamie on that one though, he'll do a lot better job of explaining that.
