managed server or unmanaged root server or gaming server?

It would be helpful if you could pin it down a little.

It's best to work with what you know so if you need to deal with security yourself it doesn't make sense to go with Linux if you only know Windows.

If you are not confident in your abilities to adminster the server then go for managed.

sorry
its just i've never rented a server before(my son does all the java stuff and setting up the database and game.
the company i got a price from only has rootservers or gaming servers(css and stuff)
but on there windows servers they say not to install personal firewalls like norton and stuff
so i'm guessing i need a different kind of protection for a server
sorry if i seem kinda noobish at this gotta leanr somewhere (

It sounds very much like 1&1 or a reseller with "root servers" but who knows.

The reason they tell you not to install a firewall is they know you will probably muck it up and lock yourself out of the server.

What id suggest you do is buy a really cheap VPS for a month to learn on, and then rent a server.

Hi,

A normal server box should be fine.. We've used an AVG firewall on a few servers and its performed fine. If on Windows the simple way we have found from preventing attacks:

# Rename Administrator Account
# Change RDP Port
# Complex Password
# Disable all other accounts
# Don't go browsing on to websites where your asking for trouble!

You'll need a dedicated server but as said above, if you know Windows. Stay with Windows.. Keep it up-to-date with the patches and use a provider who is helpful.

Why would you recommend 1&1?
He may be better going with a company who specialises in gaming servers since he may require a little bit more support.

The thread was also a week old.
