Buying a Gameserver Dedi => Help!
Ok, I'm thinking about buying a dedicated server solely for Gameserver and Vent hosting however I am still on the look for the best deal!
Im looking for a dedi in the UK with a low ping, lots of RAM, lots of Bandwidth.. Just basically, everything that I need in order to successfully host gameservers.
If you guys could help me out here and let me know if you have seen any good deals about specialised with gameservers I would be very grateful!
Many thanks,
Adam

My standard answer to those looking for gameserver hosting is to call a specialist compnay - INX Gaming should be your first choice ...

We do specialise in fully managed game servers services. One thing you might have trouble with is the vent with regards to licensing, although we provide free vent with managed dedis.
Not self-promoting, just confirming what Rob said and explaining the vent situation :P

I think this thread is welcome to "slight" self promotion as it is very specialist and a request But i would suggest going with a company that also runs dedicated servers ideally. There are only about 3 companies on here who would want to post i would imagine.

Urg, no self promotion kills
Most GSPs can host your requirements but will struggle on the old ventrilo. My best advise is visit the Ventrilo website and checkout the official sellers for the UK ( http://www.ventrilo.com/hosting.php?byctry=gbr)
Some of these will merely be companies just selling voice servers but some do both. Obviously there are some companies who sell ventrilo but host is via a 3rd party company. While there is nothing wrong with that, they just wont be listed via the Ventrilo website.
If you need help on how to setup/support for game servers etc then go with a GSP or if you already have the experience then get a dedi anywhere and get the ventrilo from your normal voice provider. Heck its normally £0.25p or £0.30p a slot for the UK (or less) if you need to get a ventrilo else where.

Well.. Im aiming to be able to host as bigger variety as I possibly can however Im primarly basing my choices around the most popular of the moment (CSS, TF2 and COD4).

That shouldn't be a problem with any of the hosts. You'll only be limited if you require some specialist games such as:
BF2 Ranked
BF2142 Ranked
Americas Army Honor
World In Conflict Ranked
So if you require support for those games, google for hosts that support it.

Chris,
I thought hosts were not allowed to provide their dedicated customer servers the ranked files anyway, isn't that against the ToS?
Regards

Yes that was my view point it of it as well but some hosts don't seem to care. Some hosts (and we do the same) provide a fully managed game server option where the client doesn't receive desktop access to the server and installs games, configures etc via a control panel.
This was the client never gets to see the physical files.

Surely you're still giving them ftp access even if its embedded within a web control panel which allows them to upload/download/edit files though?

They don't get "full ftp access" to the server because well to be honest they don't need it and many get confused where the game servers files are.
A customer in the scenario with a managed control panel/server gets access to the game server folders which can be restricted to certain games or in certain cases as mentioned above completely restricted.
Any modifications such as to the server.cfg or any config files they are allowed too are setup via a text editor which is already configured. Other games which are allowed to be accessed just get access to the game server installation and nothing else via ftp and a file editor in the control panel.
Might sound a little confusing there but it works well.
