Data Centres in the North East?
Does anyone know of datacentres in the North (prefer North East) where i can colo my own servers?
I have had meetings with a few providers in Newcastle / Gateshead areas but to be honest, they want a fortune to colo and access to hardware is extremely limited (i.e. pre-arranged office hours only).
I would consider going south to Leeds if needs be but ideally as close to Durham as possible.

Node4 then to be right up there on budget pricing but I guess that is Midlands rather than the North.

I think the North East must be like the black hole of the UK - considering this is such an industrious region we seem to not have the same sort of facilities as 'down south' (I am a Southerner that moved here about 8 years ago).
Anyway, i'll keep my eye on this thread and see what happens

Not budget last time I looked, more expensive than BSQ now from memory, also pretty poorly connected
Your best bet is probably going to be Manchester, it's the best connected city outside of London.

I'm from Durham. We put all our servers in Manchester, where I ended up moving (for other reasons, but very convenient). It's around a 2 hour drive to get to Manchester from Durham city though, assuming you're going reasonably quickly, and that assumes no significant jams, so you'll need remote assistance in/around Manchester.

Datacentre in Leeds (Thats oop North!)
Hi.
I think we've already received an email from the OP with respect this, but we a current DC in Leeds and are in the process of finding a second location for a new build out.
We benefit from dual fully diverse drop mux delivery of transit over Kingston infrastructure, a p2p cct over NTL:TW infrastructure direct to Telehouse East where we pick up transit from Tiscali Int, NTT and peering.
The building is an ex telco switching site and benefits from fibre on site from BT, NTL:TW, Kingston/Torch, Colt and Energis/CnW.
We have above ground generation and air-conditioning, fully caged and internal N+1 UPS's.
Obviously this is starting to sound like a mega advertising post so I will stop now!

A little bit un-fair. We are very inexpensive and supply 16amps to full racks of 42u for co-location. We have multi Gb ethernet resilient ring to manchester and London.
I challenge you to beat our prices like for like.

Not really unfair, you've no native transit providers on-site from memory, it's all back hauled - and when we last enquired it was a total of 300Mbit/s of capacity, shortly being upgraded to 1Gbit/s. No native providers on site (or even just the one), is what I personally define as poorly connected, it's certainly not well connected - If you take offence at that, then so be it, we obviously have differing standards
We also spoke to customers who told us that whilst it was resilient back haul, they were seeing latency of 500ms when you had an outage on one segment, so whilst it was up, it was presumably over-subscribed to be seeing latency like that?
All in all, we thought it was an okay facility but the sales staff weren't really up to speed on the facility specs/details when it comes to selling colo space (I can only assume most other customers weren't even asking any questions about the facility/connectivity) and we generally got the feeling that it didn't all add up somehow. Which is maybe something you need to look at in the future, as the info in variou splaces wasn't always consistent.
(I'm sure you'll now be looking through your CRM to see if you've dealt with us and when we looked around)

Lol, true, but where does that put Leeds? Accoring to the sign at Brent Cross on the A1 we are just "The North"... Blooming southern pansies

I know of you and your business Karl. No need for the check on CRM. The links are NOW Gb ethernet ring that are running massively under the utlization. We did have just 300Mb but as we have grown they have been replaced by the current network. So standards wise i am possibly near to your high standards Karl. We do use these links for backhaul and we use 3 tier 1 providers for multi honed transit. Works for all of our clients, so far anyway.
High latency over direct ethernet connections? Surely only if they are saturated, or maybe you could enlighten me? FYI currently at average of 4ms.
Sorry you didnt choose us as i am sure that you would have been happy with the facility. Thanks for your comments on the sales team. This will be noted and being the Internal Sales Manager i will ensure that this doesnt happen again. Feed back is greatly appreciated.
Cheers Karl
