VPS Backup Help

Hi guys

I have a VPS hosted in the states (it was cheap and its our 1st year) they host our video sharing site www.youkart.co.uk
They lost all my data & backups when the cluster died, so we had to rebuild the site and upload what data we had retained, since the cluster death they were working on the servers made another backup and that failed, so we lost it all again, I did ask for a refund as we paid for the year up front, they said no refunds after 14 days, so I’m kind of stuck with them for a year.
I’m now at the point where I need a safe place to store my weekly backup, the VPS is running Linux, so I need to know if it’s possible to site to site using ftp (fxp) within Linux, and is there any cheap UK based companies that I could use for backup purposes only.

Why dont you just ditch them and move it all to the UK anyway?

Anyone you could trust with your data over here, you could trust with your site surely?

Perhaps have a look in the offers section for a relatively budget server with decent sized disks and plenty of transfer - should do the job.

Nothing says you have to stay using it, if it's as you describe I'd be looking to move away sooner rather than later.

How much is the data "worth" to you in terms of accessibility/restore/backup time etc ? i.e. whats the budget, whats the requirement ?

I think we talked earlier, apologies if I couldn't be more help, but we're in the middle of some mmmmmmassssssive upgrades.

Little anology.

I have this favourite takeaway. I normally order a naan sandwich (normally after a long shift), which is sheesh kebab in a naan, yum yum.

95% of the time for the money, it tastes awesome. 5% of the time it tastes crap and I bin half of it.

Have you ever been to a restaurant, had an "ok" or even awesome meal and though, I have to eat it because I've paid for it? I'm pretty sure we're here now.

In fact, I kinda think you've got that right now.

You seem to have no confidence in them at all.

Do you want your project to fail because of your provider?

Budget aside, if you want your project to succeed, you need to get tough.

Personally, I'd dump current providers, and *find* some money to get this going with a reliable UK host, that will manage backups for you.

With such a catastrophic failure happening twice I would push for a refund on the basis of breach of contract. Send them a few formal letters, any responsible provider should offer you a refund.

How much disk space and data transfer are we talking about here?

all im after at the present is a place to ssh my backups, so I know i have a full working back up.

i.e. how much youre prepared to pay and what you need in terms of space, you might get some answers ...

You could simply buy another VPS and use a program called rsync to back it up, that way everything will be kept synchronised without excessive transfer as your would incur using ftp. Also rsync works over ssh so can be more secure and automated using public keys.

There are no reason for everybody not having an Offsite Backup. It is very affordable and easy to setup now.

I have FTP backup from my host on a separate box which I FTP my backup to but I also have a very cheap VPS server that is a CVS server and FTP backup that I backup to.

Also, I backup emails and mysql databases to ANOTHER server just to be safe.

I would recommend looking for a cheap VPS server (doesn't need to be powerful) that you can back-up to.

You could look at bqbackup.com or rsync.net for some backup space. I've used both (currently rsync.net) and both work pretty well.
