Well yup, but if a punter wants to put their box in, space and power is taken into account - the SFF PCs I am talking about sit on their edge on open wire shelving units, 16 to the row and 4 rows high - yes they take more space than 2 racks of cabinets, but they work, even if the cabling can't be 100% managed. Still with switches under each shelf bay along with a PDU its actually quite tidy!

I didn't have you down as a SFF non rackmount champion but then if you're based outside of London and space is cheap I can understand the thinking.

My only concern with SFF and desktop solutions is air management, not easy to keep cold air in the right place and extract hot air efficiently.

We aren't an SFF champion - most of our kit is firmly in racks. However we have one room for ad-hoc kit, including customer owned tower pcs and such like. The air handling in there is supplimented with what are known in the heating business as economisers - an oil drum with a fat fan in it basically, which is suspended horizontally to push air across the room, with intake at one side and extract at the other end - it creates a slight wind tunnel, but does mean good circulation for such little PC type platforms - don't get me wrong, its far from my idea of a solution, but it is / was / always will be an economy break to market solution and we also have quite a number of colo boxes which are customer tower type things too. V handy for those.

Racks get proper hot/cold aisle containment - or they are in the process of getting depending which room /site you are in.
