deference (noun) - polite submission and respect.
"he addressed her with the deference due to age"

    synonyms: respect, respectfulness, regard, esteem
    antonyms: disrespect
Absolutely no idea how you would relate that to an operating system. Perhaps you meant defence?

Respect the server, and the server will respect you?

You don't have to use C# to develop on Windows, there are many other programming languages (You can also use C# to develop on Linux using projects such as Mono). Likewise, you don't have to use Microsoft SQL Server as a database, you can use MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle etc.

When it comes to control panels, Plesk can work on Windows and Linux, but you don't *have* to use a control panel at all.

Basically, they're two completely different operating systems and trying to make a broad comparison between them is ridiculous. The only way that you can hope to effectively compare and contrast them is when considering the needs for a specific role.

Windows and Linux are totally different operating systems, so they have much difference in them. A hosting with Windows is more easier to use as it provides a GUI with remote desktop access. A Linux hosting is not similar to a GUI.

Both Linux and Windows operating system have their own pros and cons. Basically, Linux is an Open source and easier to configure, deploy and redistribute without any cost while windows is licensed. However, linux is not complete OS, its just kernel and need other software to be bundled. On hosting platform, many opt for Linux as it is much secure, stable (Can handle Large number of Process) easy for re configuring hardware resources and making administration easier. Windows machine have GUI enabled and need regular updates on patching and reboot is must. Both platform supports Virtualization, control panels (Except cPanel in Windows) additional DB, Mail services.

Windows Support: ASP Classic ASP.NET MSSQL /MySQL MS Access (Microsoft Access) and Remote Desktop.

Linux Support: Apache, PHP, SSHD (remote access) MySQL. usually LAMP (webservers)

In hosting perspective Linux hosting is better due to the low cost. Windows require license and costly. Windows and Linux have very big differences.

I hear lots of good things about Linux, yet I've never used it. Those who do, swear by it and tell me I'm crazy for running Windows.

Linux and Windows are two different types of operating systems. Linux is more secure and more efficient than Windows. Linux also has more of the features web designers expect, so unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.

One difference is that Linux files are case-sensitive and Windows files are not.
    Example:
On a Linux server, home.html and Home.html are different names.
On a Windows server, home.html, Home.html, and HOME.HTML are the same name.
