Thread: Sorry more questions

    Sorry more questions

as for buying a dedicated server ive come across this,
    Intel Pentium 4 560 Prescott 3.6GHz Hyperthreading 1Mb 800MHz bulk/tray Socket775

for 300 pounds, is this a good deal and what performance would i get from it (again talking about running half life 1 based games not cutting edge tech) and how many servers for games i could run off that.

I have the feeling this is the wrong forum for this or wrong site really im sorry if this is the case, please direct me to the right place if so

    Hey bloodchill,

That certainly would be a fast processor but you might have to take care when putting it in a case to make sure there is sufficient cooling. Prescotts are notoriously hot and I wouldn't recommend putting it in a 1u case unless you are confident Northwood processors run cooler if I remember correctly so if you definitely want to go the Intel p4 route they may be worth a look.

We have some 1u Dell PowerEdge Xeon servers for gaming which are fantastic if you can stomach the price

It would be difficult to say for sure how many gameservers could be run from that cpu however at a stab I don't think that 4-5 regular counterstrike servers would stress it too much.

    Hope this helps.

Hello Kris, I may want to consider editing your post as you should not be offering your own service other than in the offers or request thread.

And for Bloodchill, why not consider having say 2 x p4 2.8 as each (CPU cost) will cost you around £100 or so and I am certainly sure than 2 x 2.8 will able to run more games, more powerful than a single expensive 3.6. But of course need to consider factors like you need to get a extra set of hd, ram and motherboard + case.

Alternatively for gaming server, you can have a look at AMD 64 bit as they will over perform any Intel CPU with with the same clock rate.

Feel free to ask any more questions as many of us would very much happy to help out.

I fail to see where I offer any service in my post Sam, perhaps you can point it out.

Gameservers (in particular hlds) do indeed run very well on Athlon64/Opteron systems. The Athlon64 3500+ cpu isn't too expensive at the moment either, well worth checking out.

    Then if it makes Sam happy;

We have some 1u Dell PowerEdge Xeon servers for gaming which we have so far been impressed with, despite the relatively high cost. The servers in question are currently in use and hence not for sale at present.

    How's that?

I would say that that would be a good server for gaming yes

it all depends on what os your going to use, (if linux) i tend to find you will run out of bandwidth way before you get evan close to using up all your cpu power. Your better off having a slower cpu and chucking 2 gig ddr in it. I would also def recomend you check out amd64 chips, bang per buck wise its by far the best option now for game servers, and the 90nm cores run cooler than they used to.

Out of all of you who offered advice.. how many of you run gameservers just out of interest?

Xeon 2.8's are about £150 a pop if you go for the EMT64 cpu's, or £175 for the Prestonia ones. Plus you're looking at another £100-200 more on the motherboard cost as well. They're more powerful certainley, but are a complete change of archietecture really. If bloodchill wanted to go down that road, i'd recommend an supermicro barebones and buying cpu's and memory.
