Thread: Leaving Laptops on 24/7

Got an old Dell laptop which someone sat on and smashed the screen. However it works fine so is currently being used as a media server in one of the kids bedrooms. Been on for about a year now without any problems.

Good news chaps. I'll see how it goes. Shouldn't be a problem. .

I did this with my old Dell Inspiron 8000 and the Dell Power Supply starting pouring with smoke!!

Do you guys have house / office insurance?

Yes, my flat is very well insured.

Since this thread I have managed to get VMWare's networking to behave in vista and thus won't be leaving or needing the laptop.

Off to ebay I go.

Just to add, My Laptop has not been off for more than 15 mins ever, ditto the last one.

It does sh@g the batteries (I'm on my third) and the heatsink does get clogged up with fluff / hair alot quicker (nothing a quick clean every few months cant sort).. but aside from that, nothing to stop you.

How badly does it effect the batteries in terms of intelligence?

I never have actually thought about that

The battery on my HP that I leave on all the time is shot. You unplug it and it'll go from 100% to dead in minutes.

I would leave the battery out of the laptop if I was to leave it on for a prolonged period of time.

Ditto, thats exactly what happens time and again on mine.

someone asked me about hosting a Laptop once......they were quite serious about it too until I persuaded them it was a very bad idea

ah yes. I had a 1U colo customer send me a Dell XPS laptop and a 1U shelf. I sent it back to him

:EDIT: He had even cable tied the laptop to the shelf.

Super Iridium laptop was abused over the years ( not sexually ) just from being left online all the time !

Recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv9500 Notebook for work/pleasure/bragging etc came with all the bells and whistles; remote controls, inbuilt DVB-TV tuner, DirectX10 GFX, HDMI slots.. but after leaving it on for say, no more than 25/30 seconds the external power pack would heat up to a temperature comparable to having the central heating on....... my face.
