    Leaving Laptops on 24/7

No, I'm not going to be putting my laptop in a DC before anyone starts. .

Although I do intend to use my laptop as a testing server. Any particular reason why my laptop can't be left on 24/7? The battery is already dead so I'm going to take that out.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Mine hasn't been off for about a month.
If in doubt, get a laptop fan tray (which is what I have, altho, its never on) but should be fine.

I left my laptop on last night. It was a little warm but no warmer than it would be after a few hours use.

I'll leave it on for a few days and see how it goes. The laptop will be used quite heavily has it has a few VM's on it.

I only have a laptop in the house, my IBM x40 was on constantly for the last 3 years. The fan needed replaced after about 2 years, and I gave it to my mate a few months ago, still going strong

The replacement x60 has been on for about 6 months now with no issues (*touches desk*)

Good to know Paul. Laptops are usually fairly well designed so hopefully it won't be an issue.

That sounds to be very interesting. But laptops are ment for mobility and using them for server will eliminate this option. If you do not carry your laptop anymore then no problem.

I have a company laptop and no longer use this laptop in question.

Did want to sell it and buy a PC but new laptops are so cheap that it isn't worth selling now.

I run a laptop at one office which runs the 'music on hold'. Thats all it does so it has practiaclly zero load but thats been running for around 4 years now. Rebooted once in a while but is running constant.

Provided it has pleanty of air circulating i cant see any huge issues provided this is something which can go down and not get you a P45

That's avery good example of making optimal use of an old laptop.
I'm a bit curious to know which operating system are you using on that laptop?

Its a basic image of XP Pro running on a Compaq N610c. Though it has actually only been there just over 3 years after a bit more maths. But still not bad.

After seeing how cheap these Dell PC's are, I'm going to try and sell the laptop and use a PC for the VM station.

I leave my laptop on most of the time, unless I'm going somewhere where I need it, which isn't that often..

Generally it's left in the bedroom, I watch a film/some tv on it before I go to sleep, close the lid and sit it on the table and leave it until the next night..

I've been using my old Compaq Presario laptop as a machine purely for Skype and leaving various graphs running. Uptime currently showing as 217 days. Runs perfectly.
