I remember seeing a gadget you could attached IDE / sata / laptop hd's to and plug it into your pc usb and do data transfer

Otherwise you can just get a normal USB drive enclosure to plug into.

almost - same idea, this one you could plug in to drives at a time and was more the size of a pack cards ...

nope thats not it. Its not an external caddy as such. It allows you to plug in a 2.5" and 3.5" drive at the same time and transfer data between them or hook up to your pc via usb. It also handles sata.

imagine a square and each type of drive fits into each side with a cable also connecting to your pc ...

nah - actually google failed this time as I didnt know what it was exactly I was looking for... found many caddys and external bays etc but not the usb to ide / sata adapter cable thingy majingy
