Review Cheap Host - Before You Buy, Here's Some Reality

    Hi all,

Hope this is a useful guide of the cheapo hosts out there. I example Lunarpages, mostly, but from what I can see they're much of a muchness, for the most part.

Here's the intro. Hope it's handy. If so, pop by my blog for the lot...

"When I researched cheap-as-chips web hosts, 6 months ago, I got fed up with all the false friend posts, blog posts that sell you on whatever host - Lunarpages, IX, HostGator, GoDaddy, DreamHost, MonsterHost, HostThis, ThatHost - basically telling you they’re all great and just “Sign Up Here”.

"Damn annoying! Here’s some reality. [...]"

NB All that said, let me say, choosing a provider is an important decision. I recommend reading through many many reviews, and asking plenty of q's here, before making your choice.

I suppose that maybe the links you'd dropped made your post make more sense, but without them I don't see any useful content here? Maybe you could explain the details that you were trying to get across so that others can learn from your experiences?

    tx damien_ls

if the subject is of interest to you, you are welcome to read my content

my point really, as introduced, is that it's a minefield for most to research any type of host, and the low-cost hosts are the worst to research.

f'rinstance, i spent 4 long days looking around, googling things like, "someHost review" or "this vs that". my experience; found lots of pitch and very little reality. can only speak for my experience.

hopefully what i've blogged goes a little way to help a few folks see through some of the hype (with many hosts that nonetheless may be good value..but that depends on what the site owner actually needs)

    hope it's useful anyhow.

I think what Damien meant is that as you haven't got enough posts against your name to include links yet, unfortunately we can't read the content that you are referring to.

Ok. I think my point was that if you start a thread about "Before You Buy, Here's Some Reality" it should probably contain some content giving some insight itself, rather than just trying to direct traffic to your blog on the subject?

I'm sure there are a lots of users of and visitors to this forum that would appreciate such content, which your thread title suggests that you're offering, but then unfortunately the content isn't provided within. If you have insight to share then why not post it (instead of just trying to link to it)?

@damien_ls ... is linking to content is a bad thing?

Is it spamming? Or is it about exclusive content? Copyright issues? And retaining formatting? Seeing content in the context of it's surrounding, to help gauge qualification? And where there are related links, or should they be posted too, with the time involved, and equally free of above restrictions?

Murky area, really. Mighty interesting topic in itself. Way moreso, for me. Maybe more poignant to content creators (and their accountants) than to content hosts .

Social communities are a way to ask questions, help others with theirs, to offer useful content - not necessarily all on-site - and to be responsible in discussion.

But all that said, the main reason I don't simply copy/paste my content, is because unformatted text is ugly. As a css designer, and a bit of a lovey, I can't have that.

But, hey, sure, I want traffic too!

On a forum like this, it seems like spamming, yes. As you rightly said:

And the majority of users that know how to 'use the internet' will go to forums for advice on web hosts.

I got fed up with all the false friend posts, blog posts that sell you on whatever host
This post is exactly what that seems like. And on checking out your website, (firstly its extremely hard to navigate, and your CSS skills aren't exactly end-user orientated - just a bit of advice) your review seems fake simply because of the Lunar banners and text affiliate links (which I'm surprised you didn't put into this post as well).

Now I'm guessing you're not advertising them because they have the best aff payout, as you're hosted on them, so you're obviously satisfied (or stuck in their contract ). But most of your readers wouldn't know this.

All in all, if you're going review a web host, don't do it on your website if you want people to trust it. As they know if they do, you'll have financial gain. Forum posts are generally more unbiased than web site reviews.

To finish off, I like the google ads advertising other web hosts!

    cheers MH-Nick.

Most friendly! What's the name of your hosting company again?

For the record, my review is foremost that of a consumer, who openly says both that he is being hosted with Lunarpages, and that he is a reseller.

More to the point, is tells you why I am hosted with them. It also points out that I wouldn't recommend them for anything but a basic plan, as I have no experience of their virtual/dedicated hosting.

And it lists a number of issues specifically with Lunarpages, and with low-cost plans in general, including several dubious claims.

So while it may not suit your business, I hope it suits its target audience.

99.99% of results for "x vs y" or "x review" will be affiliate spam or bullsh!t, and not worth reading anyway ... that's irrespective of X and Y being hosts, golf-clubs, pet monkeys or anything else ...
