Thread: webhosting.uk.com thumbs up? or thumbs down?

  1. #1

Arrow webhosting.uk.com thumbs up? or thumbs down?

    Hi

I need multi domain hosting and a good 80Gb a month bandwidth, ASP.Net, PHP and MySQL too.

I have come to the conclusion that unles you have £250+ a month for a dedicated box you are at the merch of the small hosting company, and its pretty much pot luck if your site stays up and if the '24/7' support is even m-f 9 to 5.

So the webhosting.uk.com website looks very much like the http://www.genesis-hosting.com/ one are they linked? are they both in turn resellers of someone else?

But ultimately - should I take out a webhosting.uk.com reseller package (even though i'm gonna use all the resources myself)

    Any advice greatly received

    Matthew

P.S. Fast2Host are dying on thier arses at the moment poor people and Active24's 24x7 dedicated server support have ignored me for 36 Hrs.

Still, i bought three nice koi today - tigger, piglet and pooh.

You could always post in the requests forum here, and I'm sure with the answers from ASP hosts that you find, you can always come back in here and see who's worth their salt.

    Unhappy webhosting.uk.com

I've been a customer of webhosting.uk.com for a couple of years.
I am having problems, and that's when you can measure the worth of your provider...

Their telephone support I can't comment on except to say that I've tried on occasions but never got through.

They just moved my site to a new 'superfast' server, which meant hours of downtime but is faster which would be great, except I am unable to 'upload' files!

The server status has been ' apache (1.3.33 (Unix)) failed' for about 5 days. I raised a support query marked 'urgent' yesterday evening.
    No response yet.

On their billing pages they post updates on service, which are good, but there is nothing about my current problems.
In the past, with brief downtime I've enquired and got quick responses to the tune of 'your site seems OK now'...like nothing was ever wrong.

I pay for the 'middle' priced package.

(The mysql guestbook that comes with the package is vulnerable to hacking and requires knowledge of php to fix. Not their fault particularly as they didn't write it, it's one of those freebie types. Don't use it!)

I am up for renewal shortly and would love to move but haven't found anything better price-wise...you get what you pay for?

    Hi,

If you are after quality hosting with good phone support etc then i would say look at fasthosts or webfusion.co.uk both of which offer quality services.

    Question

    Thanks PCaid.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, could my problem be something else?
I cannot upload anything using the CPanel 'File Manager - upload' feature. It appears to begin upload then freezes.

    My CPanel 'server status' says:
    apache (1.3.33 (Unix)) failed
    Server Load 1.11 (4 cpus)
    Memory Used 30.4 %
    Swap 0.999 %
    Disk hda1 (/) 31 %
    Disk hda4 (/home) 73 %
    Disk hda2 (/var) 33 %
    Disk hdb (/backup) 64 %

...Yet I can view both sites I host with them and can even edit pages using CPanel online 'edit' option and these changes are visible on the site. So presumably the server isn't down?

I'm not a techie. Can anyone tell me if this problem is somehow at my end?
(I've still had no response to my support ticket). I've checked fastservers.net too and there are no problems (that is, I believe webhosting.uk.com's supplier).

    Anyone?

what version of cPanel are they running? on what OS? (should say on nearish the bottom, left hand side of the screen - that sort of issue sounds typical of cPanel having a bad update, and either them not knowing of the issue... or how to fix it.

    Hi,

    Thanks for responding.
The OS is Linux and the CPanel version is CPanel Pro 1.0 (RC2).

If there's a known issue I can point them towards, that would be great.
(It hasn't worked since they moved my account to their new 'superfast' server, but I can't remember if the CPanel version was different before).

Anything you can suggest would be appreciated.
Tis a pity they don't just respond and let me know they are, or are not, looking into it. Lack of communication is sooo frustrating.

cPanel runs a process (chkservd) that check certain services every 5-8 mins and restarts any failed services. When a sevice fails and is restored by chkservd it will still shows as failed until the next ckeck.

As long as your site are up, there's nothing to worry about.
