I dont know alot about them, however we do get alot of customers leave them and join our shared platform which tells me something. I also always end up going the Nominet route to get their domains from 1&1 who seem to drag their feet alot.

based on the number of people we help move away from them, my guess would be no, it's "not good" - generally we find people get suckered into 1&1 by the glossy brochure and/or headline 99p pricing, then once they signed up, realise its sh!te and move away.

you have to remember a few things...

1. the information provided by wh.info is pure sh!t
2. being a good host is not necessarily related to the number .of .coms mentioning your nameservers
3. wh.info methodology is flawed and sh!t
4. even based on those figures 25% of new suckers work it out and move away each week
5. did i mention wh.info data is sh!t ?

I use have a dedicated with them but then I have changed to some other providers some poeple on this forum too, there ok but there service is no so good

i wouldent buy from them again but in rateing 4/10

As with many things in life, the biggest are rarely the best all the time, they are just ok most of the time.

That's why they always have competitors who are smaller, cleaner and more focused.. but then in time, as they grow, they lose their edge, and opt to take the middle ground..

Its Cyclic, but its good.. Gives us all a chance to grow.

Think of the alternative.. if 1&1 were Excellent, AND cheap then we would all be suffering!

I use 1&1 for backup web and mail, have done for a while now.

I would class them as 'pretty good' they are fine for our needs (i.e just to send out mail if there is a problem with our own systems)

I had noticed that often my connection to their Pop3 server fails / times out which is a bit worrying, but generally, a quick 'send and receive' after the failure and its all good again :P

I certainly wouldn’t advise people to purchase dedicated servers through 1and1 though, especially considering their additional bandwidth blocks are quire expensive and you only get 150gig to start with.

I used 1and1 for about 6months (in 2002) and the customer service was bad. They would phone you up at 2 in the morning to respond to an email you sent them two weeks prior to that! The quality of there network isn't too bad to be honest, fairly quick. But they didn't really want to know if you where not happy.

I found them to be terrible, constantly delaying the delivery date of the dedicated server I ordered. I then cancelled under their 60 day money back guarantee - little did I know that they meant it would take 60 days to get a refund

I did get one after many emails and phone calls to them and would never go near them again.

I am currently searching for a friendly and reasonably priced host for colo probably, may be dedicated server. Problem is I really need an amd64 based system with 64 bit Gentoo Linux installed. I am a developer Gentoo and so have a lot of experience with this distro as well as commit access and not too many hosts seem to offer it.

That is why I happened to be here - looking for a good colo provider, really not wishing to repeat my previous mistake... Any advice would be greatfully received in that respect.

We had this problem when we were looking for hosts. Eventually, we just ended up coloing a box which we had already installed (with Gentoo) with Andrew from this forum

On their website, 1&1 claim that they have over 3.9 million people in their "global community" and 2,500 new customers signing up daily. This may be true, but think of the thousands who leave yearly due to bad experiences with the company!

And the reason why so many people know about them is due to the millions of pounds they have, a lot of which is spent on advertising! This brings in new customers who will probably end up leaving after a few months.
