Thread: Getting a domain .com, .co.uk, .co.cn, etc

Question Getting a domain .com, .co.uk, .co.cn, etc

    Hello,
A friend of mine is planning to set up a company - she lives in the UK and would like advice about registering her domain name not only in the UK, but also various other countries where she plans to do business (examples):
    1) abc.com
    2) abc.co.uk
    3) abc.co.cn
    4) abc.co.de
    5) abc.co.jp
We've seen various places where she can register (123-reg.co.uk, ukreg.com, 1and1.co.uk), etc ... any recommendations?

Also, if she registers the domains now (May09), and later asks a website designer to design and launch a website for her company (August09), is hosting expensive? (probably maximum 8 page website with pictures, text, small bit of flash animation and maybe music). She will accept adverts from companies she chooses on one page of her website, if this makes it a lot cheaper.

Sorry if this is not very clear - we're both very new to it.
    Thanks for your help.

Foreign registrations are problematic and fraught with bureaucracy, cost and hassle..

Some require you to live in that country, others to have a business in that country, and they you may have to fill in forms, fax paperwork and pay hundreds of $

Best advise is only get the ones you really need, and seek an experienced agent in that country.

Not an uncommon requirement, a few of the ccTLD's are only available to residents/registered business in those countries, we've had to setup virtual offices in a few to be able to offer those domain types !

It's also useful for brand-protection, if you're trading in Germany, not owning the .de of your .com can be detrimental.

just a few tips;the hosting shouldn't be a problem, there are enough good companies offering this for a few pounds a month. Be careful with which music you use on your site, you could be charge if its copyrighted. Lastly, it depends what she is going to do with the site, sites with adds could cause prospective clients to be put off.

Domain registrars I regularly use are:
    GoDaddy
    name.com
    Dynadot
    namecheap

Though they are US based ones which might not suit your friend.

If they plan on doing business in a country at some point then its better to just get the domain now though some have certain requirements which your friend might not be able to meet right now, like from your examples abc.de (its jsut .de not .co.de) and .jp have restrictions. .cn should be ok and its really cheap usually.

.CN although a CCTLD does not really require any nexus information from clients. I am not very sure about .JP and .DE though. As far registering Domain Names, there are many options available, but the price should always be of priority along with support provided. I have registered some Domains through answerable.com, you could check the same for the pricing.
