    Donhost Pain on domain moves

    Donhost domain muck up.

With just 3 days notice Donhost have announced that domain tokens (used to buy domains in advance at discounted prices) are being moved to their sister company 123Reg.

No choices - it will happen (but you will get 10% extra added).

However, having queried it with them, YOU will have to move your domains to the new Tag yourself and update any A records etc as they will not do that for you even though it is effectively a no choice operation.

Not only that, you will have to renew any .com names beforehand if less than 60 days to expiry but you will not be able to use purchased tokens as they will have gone to 123.

I moved hosting from them over 5 years ago as it was unreliable, left domains as the control panel worked well and prices were good. I'm now in the process of migrating domains to a new company and guess I'll just register with 123 until tokens spent and move them then.

There are somes things you would much prefer not to have to waste time doing - this is definitely one of them.

Its spill out of the Donhost absorbtion by Pipex/Webfusion.

During this transition you would have thought Pipex (at the time) would have consolidated the shambles of racks and servers that came out of Donhosts server room (read office - ground floor, lots of windows, virtually no air con) when they shifted them to Leeds. They didn't and just picked them up and wheeled the racks in - same shambles, different location.

They're both part of pipex, so no surprise it's being consolidated

Anyone worth using would be able to do this en-masse in one go for you.

Why would moving tag require any changes to your DNS setup ?

Why ? They're not an accredited registrar, just a reseller of opensrs, so there's no actual "transfer" taking place.

Sounds like a simple con-job to get people to pay to renew domains or lose the pre-paid credits to me.

They're both part of GX Networks, which used to own Pipex. They're both as bad as each other though...

From reading the OP this does sound like a con-job as OT said, why are they not changing the TAGS in mass themselves? I mean a simple email template to the automaton would take 2 mins to make, 3 mins on an SQL queary and 1 second to send the email to Nominet...
