Rules for the domain are available here.
A quick google for ltd.uk domains gives a tonne of places where you can register them.
I hadn't ever thought of registering one for our company but it might not be a bad idea
Kind regards,

ok - I'm a little confused over:
8. The Domain Name shall correspond exactly to the name registered at Companies House save for "reserved" words. Where "the" appears as the first word of the name registered at Companies House it may be omitted.
Now the company I wanted to buy for is called great big company ltd (fake name obviously!)
Can I register gbc.ltd.uk ??
Only if "gbc" is registered as the company name can it be registered.Originally Posted by wise

If it's called Great Big Company Ltd. then you can register GreatBigCompany.ltd.uk but not GBC.ltd.uk. If it were called The Great Big Company Limited, then you could register GreatBigCompany.ltd.uk or TheGreatBigCompany.ltd.uk (or both)

ukreg.com register .ltd.uk & .plc.uk domains. 123-reg.co.uk will allow you to transfer these to them but not register them if you don't want to stay with ukreg.
http://www.agcc.ltd.uk
And yeah, we got ours via ukreg.
I believe Easily (if they are still going?) do (or at least used to) do them too.
Andrew
Without trying to plug, 4DReg does ltd.uk and plc.uk domains too.
We do offer them too - the only reason that many companies don't bother with them is that the registration process is not automated - Nominet staff will manually vet every .ltd.uk application and check the requested domain name against the registered name with companies house, and then only allow it if it exactly matches their rules. This process can take 2-3 working days.
That's almost correct - the above variations on the name are correct, and you can also register variations such as great-big-company.ltd.uk. You cannot however register more than one domain against a registered company number - you can only have the one. If you register a second against it, Nominet will cancel the registration of the first domain name.If it's called Great Big Company Ltd. then you can register GreatBigCompany.ltd.uk but not GBC.ltd.uk. If it were called The Great Big Company Limited, then you could register GreatBigCompany.ltd.uk or TheGreatBigCompany.ltd.uk (or both)

And Nominet will winge at you if you try and register them and dont pre-vet the domain against the company name @ co-house as well.
So it becomes a mostly manual process for the ISP unless they subscribe to the CoHouse updates and a manual process for Nominet, although lately they've been done within 2 working days

They also get automatically cancelled by Nominet if the Ltd company ceases to trade. We have had a few notifications of this.

It's annoying that the responses sent from Nominet if they decline the registrations aren't standardised - i.e. they manually type an error message which varies every time. I guess it pushes you more towards manually processing them though.

You need to use the registered office address onthe template to avoid any confusion.
I made a special form for customers to use, and do you think they read the specific instructions about company name?
