Angry Charity Hosting UK - help

Hi everyone, hope you can help

I set up my domain and hosting through Charity Hosting UK who have recently disappeared from the face of the earth(assumed bankrupt). So.... ok maybe i picked the wrong company. So I set up hosting with QiQ and attempt to change the name servers to the new host. The domain is registered through 1&1 so I contact them and they tell me I can't change it because the account holder (the Charity Hosting UK owner) has outstanding bills and the account has been frozen.... but my domain is registered in my name and I paid for 2 years starting Nov 05. How is this fair and how can I get around this problem without splashing out cash which my charity doesn't have?

I'm pulling my hair out , please help

Ross

You have to be the 'owner' contact on the domain.

Failing that, hope you've got all those domain invoices and receipts, fax them along with some ID (if you're a charity, your domain should reflect your charity name, so send some charity certs?) and a letter.

Other than that,
Good luck. If it's near expiry, you can always let it lapse (unless it's on auto-renew, which would be frozen, if the hoster has outstanding bills) and then quickly re-register.

Thanks for the reply

I am the registrant for the domain according to WHOIS. I have a certificate from nominet confirming registration until Nov 2007.

I don't understand how they can freeze my domain? I've paid!

Waiting for it to expire is not an option

More help needed please?

Thanks again

Ring 1&1 or Nominet directly and explain the issue, they could change the IPS tag for you to move to a new provider, they should be able to help if you have a Nominet Certificate...

Normally when you receive confirmation from Nominet they give you access to a control panel in that same letter, you can use that to set your name servers (as far as I know).

OK I have phoned 1&1 and spoke to 4 people and they have now agreed to make the changes. I have learnt that there are loads of charities in the same boat as me. I was told to email transfer@1and1.co.uk with my new name servers.

Thanks for the help everyone.

1&1 have now refused to transfer my domain. There are 24 other charities locked in Tom Coppin's account with 1&1 and outstanding bills amout to a mere £35. It is going to cost me £15 to transfer the domain through nominet and i'm not impressed with 1&1. I am the registered owner of my domain and i have no outstanding bills so how can they block my domain??

wot a mess

They can refuse to assist but they cannot block access to your domain - just go direct to Nominet and pay the £15 (if you explain you're a charity, they might even waive it).
