Watched it a few nights ago, enjoyed the film as a whole, but was rather perplexed as to why he didnt realise why they were after him.

After him saying all signs of human (ability/sense/whatever?) had completely gone, then it using his own trap against him, didnt that tell him something?

My take on that is somewhat different..

I believe he set the trap himself, and simply forgot as part of his dementia.. no way one of them would have the nouse to setup something so complex.

I dont think he was.. he was more simply operating on a baser level..

For example he didnt just open the perspex door, he continued to headbut it..

I agree he was the alpha male...

If he was smart, he's be wearing a hoodie, some Oakleys and some Factor50 and day-walking

But he wasnt!

He knew exactly who took his girlfriend/whatever.

He was waiting in the building behind the trap, with his dogs, and set them on him..

its not like they were in a small area and bumped into each other, also the way he (the mutated guy) looked at him, it was obvious he knew.

As for day walking, unfortunately life doesn't work in that way, that's like me saying if you were smart, you could go underwater and breathe without apparatus, or you could survive on carbon monoxide alone..

The bit with the dogs.. even once the dogs got past the light beam (again, if he was smart, he'd realise that he could just run through it for half a seconds pain!) he still didn't chase... the dogs were fighting for over a minute.. then Will had the time to load the injured dog on to the SUV, and STILL no sign of your Einstien...

I think you're far overreading this if you're trying to suggest the mutated guy managed to setup a very complicated ratchet trap... especially without the nailgun needed to bolt the pin in to the ground at foot level (as smith had to do!)

I don't know if i'd go that far - Neil ain't been about that much recently (that I've noticed), I do hope he's not neglecting us!

My personal take is that the alpha male did set the man trap after he observed his gf getting captured. The film hints that the mutants are smarter than 1st Will Smith's character observes. In regards to how the trap was set, I think that's a bit of poetic license on the film writers side.

Its interesting that the people were confused by the start, personally I really like films that set a scene without having to explain exactly how it all played out (1st Matrix film and Children of Men both good examples). What really frustrates me is when films have to show peoples leaps of faith working out as it is so aimed at demand for "feel good" endings from the US side (again - Matrix films 2&3, Children of Men ending).

I dont really think I spoiled anything, apart from mention there was dogs, beasts, and a guy.. never mentioned anyone by name or anything :P

why is everyone assuming she was his girlfriend too?

there were about 15 of them all huddled in that vault

Anyway.. once the DVD is released I'll watch the scene with directors commentary on
