Hosting Next? Can't see it myself. People have been predicting this since I started in the industry and it hasn't happened yet. Remember Dell Hosting?... many predicted that would be the end aswell.
In any case, I'm not sure i can see anyone like google moving in on high end managed hosting on a large scale.. it simply can't be automated, so that to me seems to be the place to be over the next two years at least.

Aye,
that was my general musing at the time..
They will start offering free Control Paneled entry level hosting accounts (ie just add web hosting to the Gmail Accounts / GDrive thing)
I think with all that datacentre space they might be looking at some sort of budget/free hosting service, doubt its anything to worry about unless you are yahoo or microsoft.

E-Mail Hosting Services
These are not my views and i cannot be held accountable for anything he says.
Yep, was on slashdot i think. Although i seem to vaguely remember something about them just using 1 pair of a multicore fibre link. I may be wrong though.
Remember seeing them hiring last year for netops with experience in DF.
Google already do hosting, they offer a site builder already.

We've seen a few clients move onto Google's e-mail service, so they can pick up their e-mails through G-Mail.
Google can do anything, they have the man power and money, if they really wanted to they could build a huge DC out in the states (they already have several), pack it with clustered hardware and offer 1TB of space and bandwidth for $1 /month. But it wouldn't fit into their advertising business. So it will be free, with Google AdSense plastered all over the sites, something people do anyway on their sites, so for many people I'm sure it would make sense.
But this won't mean the market will suddenly shrink overnight. We're luckily enough to be in a growing industry with expanding uses.
James is right, Google can do anything - but the market is big enough and varied enough that there will be a wide variety of potential customers: not everyone will like google's offering, just like not everyone likes gmail.
In fact, gmail's probably a very good comparison: People were saying it would completely blow hotmail out of the water (and feature wise, it pretty much did at the time) - but as a response, everyone upped the ante and improved their offerings. And customers didn't migrate very much.
I forsee the same thing happening if google enter the hosting market: it'll be a 'wires only' type service, where you get the google panel and a gig of space and all the fancy dancy tools you need, but no php support or a limited featureset or something similar. I can't imagine the hosting market dying out overnight!
People said Yahoo would take over the hosting world, customers that moved to us from them tell us a different story. It'll be much the same with Google, sure it'll be fine for the odd little site that people want as a hobby, same as the MS freebie thing is, but for anything more, you're going to need real support from real people, not some automated system.
