Us too. Out of a batch of 20 we bought a few months ago 8 of them starting smoking badly as if there was a fire in the server. Fortunately this happened during stress testing at set up and someone was there each time. I dread to think what would have happened if the servers were in the datacentre. The smoke that came out was thick & black and would have set the fire alarm system off at the very least. Could have been a costly experience. Never seen this happen to a drive before, or since.
It was different servers this happened to each time, but it was the same transistor on the board at the bottom of the drive that melted in all of them - the one just above the SATA connection.
These were the 500GB Barracuda SATA drives that were supposed to be rated for 24/7 use.
We didn't return them to the supplier because it's really more hassle than it's worth and they make good paperweights. Went back to Western Digital RE2 drives as they've been the most reliable SATA drives for us. Never bought Seagate again even though they are slightly cheaper drives.
