That's pretty harsh.
Its amazing that some of the members are in the police force etc.

You're not allowed to be a member of the BNP (among others) if you're employed by Lincolnshire police force, not sure about elsewhere.

While it maybe a party with questionable views, we live in a free world and I personally think to not allow someone to take a job due to being a member of a registered political party is very wrong.
I agree with you Tim.
What I was trying to say was that I'm surprised a member of the police force would be a member due to the ramifications it may have on their position / career within the police force.
Ultimately as long as you do your job it shouldn't matter to what political view you have. Despite this it seems as though the police and education sectors are not keen on one supporting such a party.

It is somewhat odd, I can see why they would do it (protect themselves from accusations of racism etc.) but then again I'm not sure on what grounds they can justify it legally as it's not a banned organisation like the IRA was.

Members of the police cannot be a member of any political party, far as I know? Its not simply the BNP.

This document I saw specifically referenced the BNP, no others. It wasn't for beat officers though from what I recall, just the admin/tech staff.

But don't you think there's a difference between between being a member of the Labour party, and a member of the BNP, who are explicitly anti-immigration, for instance? That's not to say that a BNP member would necessarily make you a worse or biased policeman, but I think it's hard to argue that as a member of the BNP, your views won't affect your policing.
It's difficult. You have on the one hand a member of a party which seems to have a bias against non-ethnic Brits, in a country where statistics show policing already shows that bias. However, on the other you have a perfectly legitimate political party.
I'm not sure on the rules in the police force, but in the civil service I've been told the rules are that you can be a member of political parties, just not involved at any level above that.

Being anti immigration isn't racist. Britain is over crowded and the tories and Labour are both going to scale down/eliminate immigration unless the workers match a list of desired skills/people.
BNP may not be a "nice" bunch and have some very "dodgy" members but they are not the IRA or the KKK and it shouldn't impact what party you belong to as regards your job.
I can't remember if the list of members for the Conservatives and Labour is public ?
Nope, pretty sure they aren't. Nor should they be, same for the BNP's list.
Firstly, you are right - they aren't racist, and they aren't the IRA. Secondly, whatever political party you are in ideally shouldn't affect your job.
However, the police are here to protect the whole of society, and the BNP believe that a number of people in our society don't belong here. E.g.

Quick note, I wasn't saying that the BNP are anything like the IRA, they were just the only banned organisation I could think of off the top of my head.
