DVLA Tax Renewal letter
My car tax is due for renewal 31st December, but I'm yet to receive a renewal notice. I'm sure last year I received it end of November.
Has anyone renewed in the last two months and when did you receive your renewal notice?

You generally get them about two weeks before it runs out.

My last one was sent at the end of the month before it ran out. As I remember thinking that I'd most likely forget to renew it as the letter would be sat there for 2 weeks before I could renew.

You shouldn't even need the last 2 to do it online, just the V5. Couldn't be simpler.

Seeing as how it does real-time checks on the MIB database, and if the vehicle is > 3 years old, against the fumes-test results, yes yo are going to need them all

You said he needed the cert to tax it. What I was saying is that he doesn't physically need the certificate in his hand - just the V5.

You need them as in they need to be valid, but you don't physically need them to renew your tax. They are checked on-line when you perform the renewal. Having just been there at the end of last month doing exactly this, I know it be the case as that is when i discovered by MOT had already expired... and I hadn't even extracted the certificate from the drawer!

...which, unless you have it committed to memory, you will need the physical V5 to get.
If you want to argue about something really trivial we'll do that at the drinks next week .

So why do you need all this info, when the letter to buy it online doesn't, all I needed was the number on the front of the letter they sent me, they check it has valid insurance/mot without any further input, and send it out.

From the DVLA website:
You tell us the vehicle. You will need either the 16 digit reference number shown on your renewal reminder, or the 11 digit reference number from your Registration Document/Certificate (also known as the Logbook) and your vehicle registration mark (numberplate).
# For a new tax disc we check the vehicle is insured and, if applicable has an electronic MOT Test Certificate/GVT Certificate or entitlement to disability exemption.
