The first stage is content and relevance

The next step is determine what search engines have spidered already
Search site: and you can see what pages they have

edit :
I have been using Google AdWords for a year now
I noticed a sharp fall in performance in August and so decided to let the balance return to zero
My average rank was 157 and it has remained there ever since
I reset my balance today and within 2 hours I am back to within to the top 10 on best keywords, with an average of 4 at present
What a con this is!
There are advert types, one is pay per click, the other is pay per impression
Avoid pay per impression, you balance will soon be depleted!

Are you saying that once you started paying for adwords your natural search engine results hit top 10?

Yip, its happened before when I moved between the search types
The one I disabled resulted in the website dropping off the top 100
As soon as I re-enabled it, it instantly went into the top 10, then stabilised for the next month in the top 20
However, after three months it started to drop again

Expensive lesson learnt!

Another trick I've learned is to start off without the google checkout element
Again one month later as the keyword ranking starts to fall, add google checkout
Amazingly that increases the ranking for a short while

I've been of the opinion for the last two years that google is nothing more than a paid advertising search engine now
If you ain't running Google Adwords or Google Ads, then they pretty much dump you into the lower 100

I'm now fairly sceptical on using all of Google's tools (adwords, analytics, checkout, even chrome!) because if your website performance starts to drop, guess who's sees it as well.

I've heard Google tend to help out for example, a new blog - if it sees a good quality post it'll give it an excellent ranking, just to get the site started. But after that if visitor numbers drop, or visitors are only viewing a few of your pages, your rankings will drop.

Part of the natural search algorithm uses number of unique ip's clicking through to a site, they include clicks through sponsored links, so yes, paying for adwords does have (while you have adwords) an effect on your placement in the normal results
