Studio kitted with 1U 4bay storage units in the desk racks, and then few cm of MDF and then wham, nice big studio monitor sub ontop... Saw fluctuating IO, was quite interesting to diagnose.

Yes, but in that case it could have been the magnetic field causing IO fluctuate. Not to mention severe vibrations (bass) causing the heads to rattle on the platters.
But shouting straight at them? Now that's weird.

Very true, it could have been that solely or that ontop of the vibrations.. Either way, the hard drives didn't appear to appreciate drum n' bass and storage was relocated.
