    "Eurotrip" :)

    (not the movie)

Have already done Central/South/Western Europe by train, but now looking to possibly do the Northern parts (Scandinavia etc..) by car or maybe a camper van, as a road trip.

Any one been round these parts or done a road trip like this? (outside UK)

Blagh! No fun in that! Those sorts of holidays can be good, but sometimes you just wanna do your own thing. If we do it by camper van, we'll prob stay in accommodation every so often (to refresh our sanity) but we don't want to be tied down with bookings etc...

I'd be insane with one night in a camper van never mind a few... I made the mistake of going away with a female friend in hers once. Even tho it was a Jamie Oliver thingy with a porker engine under it and flew (in a straight line) it was a two day hell... Never again... Give me some temperature, a bed someone else changes and makes, a pool and some cold beer, now that is a different matter...

Are you thinking of a VW style jobby Nick? If your wanting to go into towns and cities I wouldnt recommend anything too big as you wont be able to park anywhere!

Not sure on this but I looked at going a few months ago and I think they have stopped the Newcastle - Norway ferry..?

    I did Amsterdam > Czech > Poland > Lithuania > Latvia > Estonia backpacking/train a couple of years back.

It was a great trip but I'd stay well clear of Riga (Latvia) at night unless you fancy getting into a Russian mafioso taxi and/or frog marched to the cash-machine at gun/knife point (I'm sure it's not all like that though).

If you've going in a camper then I'd probably invest in some decent security if you're going to be parking up/leaving it and if you're pulled over by the cops make sure you have some spare Euros.

I'd of loved to-do Sweden, Norway, Finland etc but I didn't like paying more than £ 3 a pint (Budvar in Czech at 60p a big bottle is not to be missed).

I was quite happy to be staying hostels as they look after you and have the best inside info for enjoying an area on a budget. Sharing a 12 bunk dorm isn't fun until you wake up in the morning and realise you're surrounded by international student hotness

I've done south america (all countries inc Columbia) and all of Australia (all the way around and down the middle) and New Zealand (All around both island) as well as Borneo and China, all in Camper Vans etc...

Not done much of Europe this way as I travel europe anyway... sounds like a fun trip though!

I've done a few road trips.... Most recently...

Route: Eurotunnel, Calais, Brugge (Belgium), Brussels (Belgium), Luxembourg, Baden Baden (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland),
Luzern (Switzerland), Wassen (Switzerland), Ascona (Italy),
San Remo (Italy), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Cannes (France),
St Tropez (France), The Matterhorn (Italy), Chamonix & Mont Blanc (France), Italy again :-S, Fontvieille (Monaco), Grenoble (France),
Chambιry (France), Dijon (France), Paris (France).
    Before that...
New Zealand South Island in a campervan
New Zealand North Island in a car

Australia in a car.... Sydney --> Canberra --> Melbourne by air to Alice Springs/Uluru, by air to Cairns --> Townsville --> Airlie Beach --> Great Barrier Reef in a seaplane for snorkling :-) --> Brisbane --> Gold Coast/Surfers Paradise

Mid and West Coast USA... Colorado Springs --> The Rockies --> Grand Junction --> Arches NP --> Lake Powell --> Grand Canyon --> Lake Mead --> Las Vegas --> Death Valley (almost ran out of petrol) --> Mono Lake --> Yosemite --> San Francisco --> Monterey --> Santa Maria --> Santa Barbera --> Malibu --> San Diego --> Tijuana (Mexico) --> LA
Absolutely love driving holidays. We only took a tent as a backup just incase on the Europe driving hol but never needed it. We always seem to be able to find hotels or fairly decent motels wherever. Never really plan a route, just where we're starting from and where we need to finish then make it up as we go. 250 miles a day seems about reasonable most of the time.

Definitely going to do a few more european road trips, probably Northern Europe so would love to hear how you get on.

Its good to see you guys have done similar stuff before. I'll update you in a few days when we've decided more about roughly where we want to go, and how we'll do it (vehicle wise), and will be good to get your opinions on that.

I visited Stockholm very recently and it was good fun - the level of English spoken within the city far exceeds any country I've been to where it's not the primary language. It's very expensive for food and drink though. I've not been outside of the city except as far as Skavska airport, but I definitely plan to go back and see more by road.

Good luck and report back here!

Spent a week in the Norwegian mountains outside Lillehammer a few years ago. Very picturesque, but I'm not sure I'd like to drive the steep hill roads in anything other than a tank (Volvo with winter tyres in our case).
