You'll tell everyone they're their for the eggs and they're not pets.

When you find them stood at the back door waiting for food, or following you round the garden they'll be part of the family before you know it.

Never tried corn, but I echo your mushroom failure.

Salads are such a winner in summer because the crap you get from the supermarket is days old, tastes of nothing but water and is..well..crap.

What gets me is that I pick a lettuce from the garden, use some, put the rest in the fridge. By the next day, it's way past it's best, limp and not good to eat.

Take a supermarket lettuce, do the same and it'll last for days.

Makes you wonder what they do to the veg to make it last so long.

You should grow some salad leaves, we have a container just outside the back door (no idea what variety is in it, some form of lettuce though) and we just pick enough for the meal, wash & eat. By the time we've got to the end of the container, the 1st plants are ready to harvest again.

Definitely the best way. I usually grow only cut-and-come-again lettuce because otherwise you find yourself struggling to keep it fresh. Picking exactly what you want, when you want, to use right away is without a doubt best. You can usually keep them from bolting if they're kept nice and wet through the hot months.

We've got an allotment, grow allsorts on it. Beetroot is nice and easy, as are onions, potatoes too - all of those will happily grow in containers. Salad leaves - best done at home in window boxes etc. as you pick whe you need. As to what supermarkets do to food, sometime they are iradtiated to killl all bacteria etc. Tomatoes are actually really easy as well - get a 99p grow bag, cut 2 4-6" square holes in them, put a plant in each hole, jobs a goodun.
