    ****ing stupid country

URL : Law Set To Reveal Gender Pay Divide: Firms Forced To Publish Wage Detail | Politics | Sky News

And there i was thinking most women earnt less on average because they spend less time working up through paygrades in their life with time out for children, many women just working part time to look after children also.

What's everyone elses thoughts on this?

At least the latest tax rises cover the interest payments .... oh wait, no they don't.

Edit: I'm struggling to grasp the effectiveness of this bill. Can anyone clarify if it includes salaries for executives/directors, and if it ignores position in the company? If it does, the average pay is going to be pretty much determined by the ratio of male/females in top positions, and there's surely a disincentive to employ women in lower positions.

I side with women heavily in this debate. Women can have children, men can't.

Why should they not receive the same pay for doing the same job?

Why should women work part time to look after the children?

Why can't the man work part time to look after the children ... ?

I agree. They should earn as much as men. And I think many men woudl like to be able to spend more time with their kids working part time.

A lot of companies allow this sort of thing and UK2 does allow me the occassional work from home to be able to do that. UK2 Rock.

I wasn't talking about whats right, i was talking about averages at present which is the cause of this argument.

On average there are more men in work than women, and therefore these men obtain more qualifications on average. To then say all women should earn the same without the qualifications is quite simply mad.

This is not an argument of if both men and women should be entitled to work from home, or work the same amount. Its simply a case of the goverment trying to force less qualified women to be paid the same as men with more qualifications.

Im not going to debate if its right that men do in fact do more work than women or not, its just the way it currently is so i can't see why the pay should be equal until this shifts to be equal also.

What I men, regardless of the detail, is if all things are equal then pay should be equal. So, if they are saying that woman should be paid the same if things are unequal, then I side with your argument.

I completly agree if someone is doing the "same job" then the pay should be the same, what i disagree with is labours argument that as on average a woman is earning less than a man, this should not be used to force employers to pay women more for doing a lesser job as they have less qualifications after having taken time out to balance it all up, which is what is being suggested.

If anyone chooses to take time out and therefore miss out on qualifications and pay increases, that is their choice, and it should not be balanced to make things "fairer" in someones eyes. And despite what James thinks, most women take time out and men don't with children, and i did hear that a child should spend most of its time with its mother in the first few years anyway

I don't think anyone seriously thinks that men deserve to earn more than women, but the complications this bill are going to bring outweigh any benefits.

This legislation is all PR and it's about as useful as a laminated pizza.

    over reacting?

Aren't people over reacting a little? To begin with its for companies with 250 and more, and I don't see anyone proclaiming women should earn the same for less or different work.

This whole premise annoys me immensely. A woman can choose to bare a child, but a woman cannot choose to not bare a child without facing questions of morality.

And despite what James thinks, most women take time out and men don't with children, and i did hear that a child should spend most of its time with its mother in the first few years anyway
I know this is the case now, I was making the point it shouldn't be this way and men should take more responsibility. It's clear for all to see there is a bias towards men. Its reinforced with legislation debated by members of parliament who are prominently men. With women in prominent positions within Government, this is what we see. It's called being fair and supporting all of our society.

As a household we facing a very similar issue, we decided that when my daughters where born, that my wife would give up her job (Banking, management level), and stay home to take care of the children instead, it's very important for kids to have at least one parent to care for them 24x7 instead of strangers.

Now that they are older, she is planning to get back to work, but at 36 she will be paid the same as a more junior person, men or woman .. thats the result of choice we made

But with this report, it will show as if she is being penalized against male peers, thats just wrong, I also think this will make people like her more self-aware of the penalty of the years they took off, not good for morale if you ask me.
