    Oracle Kills Virtual Iron

Oracle kills Virtual Iron-ware • The Register

While many people raved that Virtual Iron was cool software I gave it a wide bearth as I was always wary that it never seemed to achieve the same level of visibility in the virtualisation marketplace that XenSource and VMWare had. XenSource at least had the key Xen people who were always mentioned when virtualisation came up in the press.

Perhaps an undeserved death but the market can be harsh.

Rather glad we forecast it's death and decommissioned our Virtual Iron based platform in favour on our own based on open source Xen...

When I looked at VI and Xen some 18 months ago they looked utter shite compared to VMware.

It cost shit loads to license but it just works.... 18 months in a production environment without hiccup. Just rolling out VSphere 4 in the next few months.

Would be interested to see where Xen is now since Citrix came along.

We run VI and sold it too, the management layer had some great tricks, shame about the buyout. Oracle just want you to sell their products. I talked to a UK Partner Development Exec and she just said "You can download Ocacle VM free and sell Oracle support and middleware".

Didn't know Oracle had a VM, something to try before buying VMware I guess.

So what's the plan then? Move to VMware or Citrix?

VMware is apparently granting 40% discount for ex-Virtual Iron customers but it's still too expensive...haven't looked at the Citrix alternative yet, so best I do I guess..

Uhm, Citrix is looking extremely appealing, but can the free version do VMotion? Apparently the free version does, it's called 'Live motion' - is this really true?

    So all we need is:

    Live motion
Live Migration (or their equivalent, which I'm guessing is 'Intelligent server maintenance mode'?)
    iSCSI support

Can't believe this is ALL FoC?

It is expensive but honestly it's well worth the money. VMware really does just work... and when it doesn't their support is fantastic.

Lea - you can do XenMotion (XenServer equivalent of VMotion), and iSCSI all in the free xenserver, you just have to activate it once every 12 months by filling in a form with some basic details...

I'm not quite sure what the difference between Live motion and Live Migration in your list is though (in XenServer, XenMotion is also known as Live migration)?

Just watched the intro...Citrix Systems » Citrix XenServer: Efficient Server Virtualization Software

Wow - love it already. But is auto igration on node failure (VMotion) free, that's my only remaining question as I can see Live Migration is...

The auto migration with failed nodes is not free no.
The Xenmotion (you choosing to move a server whilst the nodes are up) is free.

    It is great software!
