Aston Martin delivers a car to the masses with £20,000 Cygnet

Talk about diluting the brand... I was talking to a friend about this some time ago because he said something like "Why don't Ferrari make a cheap car".

Couldn't think of anything worse honestly, these cars are all about desirability... they are supposed to be expensive and hard to get. That is a big part of what makes them so special.

Indeed, its a terrible idea.

Looks like mass produced tosh - it hints at a cross between a Hyundai iX that is advertised on telly every 2 seconds and a little peugoet / ford KA - and something tells me there is a lot of Ford in that horrid box...

Its based on the Toyota iQ, including the toyota engine, so probably the most reliable Aston ever

Seriously, they are a business in need of every sale they can get, and I am sure they will sell lots of them.

However.... they can only be bought by current Aston owners, so it limits their market slightly....

They should give them away free with the DB9 as a BOGOF offer

Tell that to the numnuts in the EU that are trying to force emissions regulations on companies like AM. It sounds like they either significantly bugger the cars they produce or they sell something like this to offset this global warming carbon nonsense that is being forced on them.

I think I might buy one... could be a good little company run around.. but only if they do limit it to existing owners only, and only if it's not all plasticy and horrid like most Toyotas.

When you aren't selling any cars, the expensive brand might not mean as much. I can see them sell to brand conscious in the same way as the A-Class and the Audi A2. At least they should make a profit on them which is more than can be said of the A2 which I believe cost more to make then it sold for.

£20k! Jokes... £10k for the car and another £10k for the badge?

Hardly for the masses... Looks hugely overpriced when you compare with other hatchbacks.

As one guy says on the Times Article:
"Only divorced middle aged women will be trading in their Mini Coopers I suspect ... personally I think they look like a Lunch Box, with an Aston badge on the lid."

I think its a sensible way to bring their overall emissions in line (especially if they do limit to existing AM customers only).

I think it's a really interesting idea. You can't get away from the fact this is ground-breaking, no "super premium" brand has attempted anything like this.

The fact that you are paying £10k for the badge, styling and a bit of leather is important too. I would imagine this is a big enough premium to stop people buying it for the name. (At least in the most part.)

I think it's a really nice thing to be able to offer existing AM owners. Shame that their actual cars are a bit rubbish (sorry Mark/Matt, but it's true!)

Maserati did that a few years ago - didnt help sales, but did shift the old "metal" ...
