    Would You BuyThis?

    Hi,
firstly im not advertsing, im not selling this, and nore do i sell this,
im just simply asking for some feed back about it,

So this plan im about to show you is a vps...

    1GB RAM
    160GB HDD
    UNLIMITED B/W
    1IP

    £15.00 - £20.00 -/- Per VPS -/- Per Month

the vps is uk based, as it would be on a uk based server,

    so
what do you think about the server specs?
    and the server price,
could it go up or down on price?
would you buy it from a new host?
would you buy it from an established host?

AS SAID AGAIN, I DONT SELL THIS VPS, AND NO THIS IS NOT AN ADD,
i was thinking about selling a plan like this,
but wanted to no what other people think about it first
    =)

    many thanx
    mark
    =)

Unlimited BW doesnt exist - at any price - so , No, I wouldn't touch it.

Even if that was "unmetered" (i.e. we dont care how much you use)
then your "limit" could be anything - depending on the number of VPS sold, the NIC speed, the switch speed, the network design, whether the provider contends their fabric/network/whatever - so practically anything from 1Mb/month to 2Tb/month

Either way there *is* a limit and so I'd advise you find a VPS provider who isnt going trying to scam/lie to you.

I dont understand - do you mean bandwidth or transfer ? where is this 1:10 contention ?

As an example 1.77Tb of *TRANSFER* (from a live VPS server) is ~19Mb/s on 95%ile *BANDWIDTH* - so at say £20/month, the connectivity alone costs £380 ...

I wouldn't buy it, too much bandwidth to be viable, while i can understand you might hope people would not use the 1.6Tb and therefore be ok.

If they did my server would be screwed too.

I think the 1:10 contention he is referring to is the disk space : bandwidth

Barmy, as Rob says, that is the potential of 5.3Mb/s flat rate on your transit - you haven't a cat in hecks chance of paying for that with £20 pm, unless you are massive, mega peered and use rubbish upstreams. And you haven't even touched on hardware/routing/support costs.

Going off topic here, i know of many many providers who can beat that per mbit price and are of very high quality.

Of course it wouldn't leave much for all your other costs.

But the question here is, why do people assume every low cost bandwidth supplier is poor quality. Most i've used are acctually better quality than the more expensive options.

I can only assume its a case of those who aquire more bandwidth can therefore supply it at a better price in many cases. It does come across as unfair to push those working on a bulk method for a decent bandwidth into the same basket as those reselling a poor quality upstream.

Perhaps this should be split, wheres the Mod?

Neil, to be fair I did quantify that by saying you were mega peered and loosing a good %age at virtually no cost, or in the pence per megabit in any case. But you are still going to need full routes, and again, unless in mega volume you are going to pay circa £3-4 a megabit with the "budget" or less favoured full route providers and potentially a whole lot more for some of the better names in the market.

Of course if you are buying aggregated routes from a T2 and have enough commit, I guess they may offer at less than £4 per megabit..

No you said, theyd have to be well peered and use rubbish upstreams.

Thats a pretty bold statment is it not as you implied it for any company who can sell at below £4/mbit.

You "ok im doing it anyway"

So really it was just advertising as you were never going to listen to any views?

My thoughts exactly neil, I really don't know of many providers offering nearly 2TB for just a VPS?

It is a balance of routes at the end of the day. If all your traffic hits peering then it may well cost the ISP pence per megabit. If all of it is to SA/AU etc then it is more than likely going to cost a damn site more than £4 per megabit. Ultimately it is how much the aggregator is prepared to hedge their bets on the mix of routes taken. That said, there is one Tier 1 who is known for touting their wares at £3-4 a megabit for full table on occasions, but you have to accept that it might well be full routes, but they are often far from optimal.

So you don't sell it but have autority to change how much BW is allocated?

Assuming you are selling this how much bandwidth does the server have in total? Assume it's full of VPS's all dragging 1600GB can you support/afford that?
