How to choose a good hosting company?

What do you expect from a good hosting company? Quick order setup? 24/7 support? Diversity of available locations? 99% uptime? Guaranteed money-back period? Freebies? Many companies offer such things and most of these is a MUST, actually.

Here's our idea of REAL value-adding hosting service features:

    Multiple upstream options
    Multi-homed network in certain locations
    Build your own Supermicro-based server
    Remote power management & monitoring
Bandwidth pooling and VLAN option for several servers in the same POP
Unmetered 1 GB bandwidth in certain locations

This is what really makes hosting service better than competition.

In case you have other features to mention - feel free to join the discussion )

It is good before choose a company to read some reviews in the internet. There are many review websites and forums, which gives better overview for the company

I wonder if anything topic-relevant will be posted in any thread ever. I should have stated in the beginning that useless oneliners are not allowed. Feel free to delete the thread if you wish, Ed.

When choosing a good hosting company for project first of all you have to analyze how serious in perspective your business is. Probably it is a good thing to go with dedicated server from the very beginning. If it is your case, I can advise to pay attention to InxyHost. It is a company with good attitude to customers and good history of providing such services. Also they help with project migration, so you will have virtually no pain choosing them.

The one line replies in this thread pretty much sum up the public areas of this forum and why I rarely bother reading anything public on WHC.

The bad thing is that private forums are so private new members can't get access to them, nor do visitors\potential customers. And private forums are just chatrooms for previoulsy accepted members without any real value for forum or its participants.

Changing ownership and rewriting the forum? For a year? Being unable to receive root admin password from previous admin and accept hundreds of applications?

I'd say it is the shortest way to writing on the wall.

One very important aspect of a hosting provider is the 24/7 support. No matter how good the specs are of the hosting if customers will have difficulty contacting the staffs for help it will become one of the reasons why they will leave.

Most customers who left their previous providers usually talk about how bad their customer service are etc. So this aspect should be looked at with importance as well.

Apart from all the points mentioned in thread... Reliability and speed of access is also extremely important. Site that is frequently down may loose lots of visitors.

    Thank you..
