    Design help

    Helloooo,
I am having some problems with this page - http://www.zimbe.com/
I am making a website for a carpet company and I am previewing it on this temp address.

In firefox it looks fine and how I want it to look, but in IE it looks wrong on the right hand side.

    Can anyone help?????

Also can you please tell me what you think of the design etc etc and if you have any suggestions.

    Dave.

Do you mean the fact the orange bar extends to the bottom of the page rather than stopping at the bottom of the copy? Or the difference in HRs?

Design wise it looks OK although you could try setting a background colour on the rest of the page to draw the eye to content in the centre. Also, it might just be me (in fact i'm pretty sure it is) but using Arial on websites looks strange to me - Verdana all the way...

I like the flash although - is that all it does?

The footer - could have a background colour to show the bottom of the page. A different font colour and smaller?

You also havn't specified a DOCTYPE nor does your page validate as HTML Transional - http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...w.zimbe.com%2F

If you can avoid tables on the page do - try to use presentation CSS techniques (google can help or your local bookstore).

Edit: I'm sure there is a reason you have Mr Kember all over your frontpage but I can recommend using http://www.lipsum.org for generating some temporary copy while your developing.

    Thanks for the advice.

I am planning on learning to use CSS but like everything I always say 'I will do it tomorrow' and never get round to it.

I want the orange offers section to stop at the end of the writing instead of carry on.

Plus WOW!!! I didn't know there was that many things with the page. 37!!! I will have to sort that out.

How do you specify a doctype????

I see your point about not using tables but what else am I meant to us to keep everything together?

Also I have setup a system where the people who run the carpet company can edit the pages but unfortunatly I have only found a few which are free but you have to edit the page using HTML codes. Can anyone recommend one which I can easily intergrate into my current design?

    Thanks

    Dave.

Edit: I do you CSS but they are built into each page, not a seperate document.

Edit again: THe flash part will link to a online catalog with the products relating the part you click on.

Yeah, that flash looks nice, but can you not do that with CSS/Rollovers and avoid the inaccessability of flash?

Remember the DDA now applies to websites or so i'm told, should be something that needs considering anytime you make a website these days now

Of course my bull-bar is safe, it sits so high the old people and the children go underneath.

You have to do much more than just that.

The easiest way is to create the site using pure CSS (for layout and design). The site should be valid as HTML and readable with users using screen readers etc...

Anything but ASP & Windows - so you pretty much want PHP?

There are plenty of CMS systems around - most will be too complicated for your specific purpose. We always end up writing our own for small sites.

Problem is - with the more compliated CMS systems, you would need to be pretty skilled to implement them in such as way they would work with your design.

What have you done already with regards to this?

I have used a script which allows you to login and then it goes to the normal website but under some content it has an edit. If you click the edit it opens the related html document in a new window which then allows you to edit it, but it shows all the html codes. I want something which is more like msword but simpler.
I can use the html fine but the people I am making this computer are 'IT thick' so they ain't going to have a clue.

Sounds like you need the basic CMS system we just wrote which does just that but with a WYSIWYG editor.

Did you program the original code?
