I'm sure there was a really glaring omission from the apple tv - although at the moment i can't think of it.
Bit of a useless post then really!

Apple TV - I haven't got one - it really depends what your going to be putting on it. Buying TV programmes through iTunes is quite expensive. Also if your planning on ripping DVDs and encoding them for the Apple TV, your going to need a quite a bit of spare time.

That is the main reason I would want it - I just want a nice small device that will allow viewing of DVDs.
I have since had a thought, and it may be cheaper to get Wii and use FLV streaming - although that is something else I will have to test before going down that road.
I do really want the easiest option though

If your just watching DVDs - what's wrong with a £8 DVD player from tesco? That's easy.

My children already have LCD TVs with DVDs built in - but I want them to be able to simply choose from the "duke box" what to watch and when, without having to find where the DVD has been left/lost - although to be honest it's probably more like I just want to get this type of setup inplace - and I will

Have you thought about a Slingbox instead?

I have a slingbox - but it won't do what I need as that will just stream what ever souce I have plugged in, eg Sky, to a SlingBox client - and only one client can view it at a time (not sure if they have changed that with the new hardware)
Basically I want to create a "duke box" of movies, and just choose from a menu which one to watch, and potentially have different movies streamed to different rooms.

How about using a PVR sized linux box with MythTV, that would allow you to rip DVDs etc.

I really want to do the same. Let the kids go and pick a movie and watch it rather than loose DVD cases etc.
Really want o set-up a media centre hub in the house then with extenders in each ofthe kids rooms.
Just not sure how to go about it yet.

I tried using the xbox as a media center extender and it was dire (very slow). the 360 is meant to be much better, but we just have mini pcs as 'slave' media centers, all pointing to a central repository of cds, dvds and recorded tv. was a long process ripping 400 cds, and i'm slowly doing the dvd's now, but the end result is that anywhere in the house you can play any of our music, including playlists, or dvds etc. Obviously the downside is that you have to have a PC as well, but with something like the hp slimline pavillion it's quite compact and not too power hungry or noisy.
We're thinking of buying the house that we're currently renting, at which point I would probably put in a "proper" multi-room system (the Linn Knekt system for example is pretty cool and a lot neater than what I described above)
