Thread: RaQ OS on Qubes?

  1. #1
We have just got a hold of some very cheap brand new Sun Cobalt Qubes from a dot bomb. Does anyone know whether we can install the Cobalt RaQ OS on them instead as Qube OS does not seem geared up to hosting lots of sites.

get on the cobalt mailling list and go through it's archives - it's been discussed a lot lately with pointers .. in essence *probably* is the answer - requires rom updates, bios flashing and a bit of manipulation - you *might* be better to ebay them off and use the fund to buy some RaQ's

I can recommend someone with some new & 2nd users ones but that would break the advertsiing rules

If you can flog them on eBay you could get ordinary servers with the funds. The RAQs are no longer on the market, so support is not easy and they are a pain to keep patched.

    Hi,

Sun are still promoting the RaQ550 so there's still life in them yet. Don't know what happened to the XTR's though, never seemed to take off.

I wonder why, Rack XTR at 3x the cost of a Linux server + software, or decent Linux server + software and money in the bank. I know which I'd choose.

Qube OS is not geared up to hosting multiple sites as the hardware insnt geared up to hosting multiple sites

As Rob said, ebay them and use the money to get either a raq or a normal linux box.

XTR sadly promised much, delivered sod all, hardware was poor for sun/cobalkt, o/s had good and bad points, never really got supported.

Good idea for a DB server, especially with eth firebird/borland interbase, with theraid and fast disks etc but the RaQ4 was abetter box ...

    Mostly people like them as
    (a) it out of the box so no server admin / setup needed,
    (b) unlike a generic o/s its *designed* for hosting
    (c) the management is increrdible simple, plug 100 into a control station and mange as 1 server

you're paying for the ease of use and the control panel

have had a lot of probs with the 550s and patches, not tested properly by sun, or kernels f*cking the box up - sad really.

The mailling lists are good though, there really kept alive by the users these days ...

Yeah, but the extra you pay on top of a normal Linux box would furnish you with 100s of HSphere licenses - a much better CP
