Microsoft pulls Win Enterprise unauthenticated!

Today I discover that MS has pulled 'Unauthenticated' from Win Enterprise since 1st March, and now we're left with just Web or DataCentre under SPLA..

DataCenter has the advantage of being able to run unlimited OSs (assuming locked to a socket) all for the same single cost, but how many can you really run from quad cores. Obviously I'm thinking from a VM platform's perspective and of course it dependable on individual workloads.

But, for a lightly loaded server I would expect 8 at absolute max.. assuming you can populate at least 8 Gigs of RAM also...

Any thoughts?

Regards
Lea

Afraid not, for new licenses you need to purchase either Windows web Edition or Data Centre - I'm looking at the March price list from my SPLA supplier.

Also, another post here: http://forums.webhostautomation.com/...ad.php?t=23775

Have I missed something?

Cheers

LeaUK2, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Perhaps Insight are incorrect then?

According to someone else in the thread, insight also confirmed the details that it was simply a mistake by M$ that it was pulled.

Of course the question remains, can I get away with Web Edition... Uhm... I don't plan adding Media Services, so I can't see any issues..

And, what should I place on the iSCSI server... full version with 5 clts?

That latest SPLA list from Insight doesn't contain the unauthenticated Enterprise version...so I'm still finding it hard to digest that it's a mistake?

However, the list obviously includes: Windows Web Server All Lng Lic/SA Pack MVL 1 Proc but no mention of the word 'unauthenticated' either.. Now Web edition HAS to be 'unauthenticated' but Insight feel they can miss the wording out. Uhm...

So perhaps they have 'missed' the wording for Enterprise too? Still, poor show if the rep I've just spoken to me is telling me porkies!? I won't be happy..

The thread basically says it was a mistake, it was accidentally removed, it will be back on again next month, talk to your account manager etc.

Uhm, that's what worries me, I spoke to the SPLA 'specialist' (literally 1 hour ago) and he mentioned that Data Centre/Web were the only option for Unauthenticated.. so what we're saying is their documentation is incorrect and he's 'misinformed' then?

meaning I'm misinformed - and now confused...

Back on the phone Monday I guess..

Right, so assuming Enterprise can be purchased Unauthenticated - great, that's 4 OSs for the cost of one (on a VM platform).

So, moving slightly OT how does one class the license required for an iSCSI server acting as a SAN.

Any thoughts?

From my account manager from Insight last week:

Quote:
Dear customer,

It appears that there are several errors this month on the SPLA pricelist from Microsoft.

They have deleted all Windows Unauthenticated part codes as well Terminal Services. Our order system and online tool is linked to this pricelist so these codes are not available to order online at all.

At present Microsoft can not give us a confirmed lead time for the pricelist to be corrected and resubmitted to Insight, therefore any SPLA reports that include these products will need to be submitted manually by using the order template (attached) or by sending an official purchase order. We will then place each order manually using dummy codes to ensure all reports are submitted on time to Microsoft.
