Some plesk issues
Hi,
I'm having a few niggles with plesk and was wondering if anyone had experienced the same issues:
I have plesk 7.5.4 on Windows 2003 service pack 1.
One of the first problems encountered is creating an SMTP mail relay to external MS exchange boxes. As far as I'm aware this is achieved via dns.
ie: mx record = mx.domain.com
mx.domain.com A 123.456.12.3 etc?
I have disabled the mail part of the domain.
How do you set up smtp relays? Am I doing it right?
Second problem:
Having part a domain on the server and not being able to send email to it.
For instance if I have domain1.com in house and just want to point the A record at our server. This poses a big problem with people on that domain sending email to domain1.com. It just keeps bouncing. Again the mail and dns have been disabled.
These both instances seem to be because plesk is sort of taking over mail duties for domains. It’s rather annoying and im not sure of a solution to the problem.
If anyone could point me in the right direction or has experienced these type of things I'd be most grateful.
Cheers
Jon

I'm not qualified to help with Windows issues and I'm not sure if you'll find help here tailored to Plesk, but I'd recommend posting on http://forum.plesk.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=114 as there's several helpful regulars there.
On Plesk for Linux part 1 is achieved by simply adding an entry to /var/qmail/control/smtproutes. Part 2 would be to disable mail in Plesk and then create an 'A' record for mail.domain.com pointing to the destination mailserver, this may work on PleskWin but you'll get confirmation at the URL above.

Hi,
Cheers for getting back to me.
So on a linux system for part one you would do the dns as I described then add an entry into the /var/qmail/control/smtproutes? Or would you just alter the smtproutes file?
Part 2 isn't as important as part 1 but I would definately like to try and resolve it.
I've already spend some time on the sw-soft forums but as you correctly state it is more likely that somebody will be able to help me.

For part 1 I'd just modify smtproutes, but this is obviously qmail rather than mailenable/merak/smartermail (I think they're the options!) you'd use on PleskWin. This is just standard procedure for qmail, it's nothing to do with Plesk at all.
If you haven't posted on SWsoft forums I'd recommend it, or drop them (or your reseller) an email to ask. I've no idea if anyone around these parts uses PleskWin.

I'm surprised part 1 doesn't work the way you're doing it though, it sounds right as adding the domain to the server will enable relaying for it, and the DNS should work if you have Mail disabled correctly in Plesk. It may be a bug to do with integration with whichever MTA you're using.

I thought i'd post a quick update for everyone. I've sent a few email's to sw-soft and recieved some interesting results.
The only way I can smtp feed is to do one of the following:
a: Shut down all the mail services on our server. Not at option
b: Have the mx records hosted at another location.
I must admit I'm rather dissapointed as we have a few clients who have MS Exchange boxes.
Oh well, the rest of the system is fine so I can't moan.
