Thread: cPanel reliability vs. Virtual Server setup

cPanel reliability vs. Virtual Server setup

My current host runs some sort of virtual server system allowing me a "reseller" type account. I guess I share my server with lots of other people and many more websites etc.

I want to move my account to a host offering a cPanel type solution - its cheaper and Fantastico looks interesting...

I've read things here which suggest that when a script starts taking up too many server resources or crashes a server all users will be affected. I'm not sure how different this is from my current set up but I do know I can re-boot my own server without affecting other users on the same hardware. Is the same true for cPanel setups?

On the other hand I am currently able to edit my config files, ssh etc whereas I get the impression cPanel type hosts don't allow this - maybe I won't be able toe re-boot either?

In a nutshell, are cPanel type hosts as reliable as shared virtual hosts like DSVR ? Will I miss not being able to edit my httpd.conf ?

    Thanks

You are best off looking for a dedicated server and install your own cPanel.

Why not go for a VDS / VPS system (like your current setup) with cpanel / whm installed? Or as Paul said, a dedicated.

Thanks but I think that would cost more than I want too spend and I don't need the disc space dedicated servers usually come with. I'm also not too hot on installing applications on servers which is why I'm looking for something pre-installed!

VDS? Do you know of a VPS set up with cPanel installed? In the UK?

    Thanks!

The guys at www.catalyst2.com offer high quality UK VPS accounts, may be worth giving them a shout to check whether they can do one with cPanel installed.

you wont get any of the things you're asking on a shared server
    - letting a shared client reboot a server would take it down for everyone
    - letting you edit the config files would potential kill the box completely
    etc

why not get a licence for cpanel (appx £35/month) and fantastico (appx £60/year) and install tem on your existing setup ?

Adam Smith (a member of these forums) offers such a product.

Their website is www.2host.co.uk - give them a call sometime.

(I don't think that it is mentioned on the website... but they definitely do it...)

Yeah, should use dedicated server. I heard that VPS with cPanel is slower then VPS with other control panel.

That's not true. I'm not CPanel's biggest fan but it does run fine on VPS's if the VPS provider sets them up correctly. There are a lot of misconfigured VPS's running CPanel as it's not quite as simple to setup VPS configurations as other control panels (Plesk/DirectAdmin) on the Virtuozzo platform.

I believe it's US$7 if you buy something like 10/20 minimum.
